Stronghold/Keep Questions (Spoilers?!)

Post by -Vile- »

I have a few questions regarding the stronghold which i don't feel were adequately attended to in previous posts. Perhaps with enough information we can turn this into an adequate list of all issues regarding the keep.

Where to begin:

Well i'm currently on chapter 2 in my first run through (just completed the quest to unlock the 5 powers to defeat the shadow king...now i'm to search for the person who stole the 5th power).

In any event i want to know when i should begin constructing the tower/church etc... (and how to actually make this dialogue option available, as it currently is not) and furthermore, how to provide my men with better equipment (i presume ore deposits that are mined, but again, this is not made clear in any dialogue options i see).

If people could post any advice they have for maintenance of their stronghold (when/how/where to get various recruits/buildings etc....) that would be great.

I think how far you can upgrade your keep is linked to how many ore deposits you've found -- either that, or what Act you're in (which might be about the same thing). When you get to the point where you'll need to use your keep in a battle, you'll be given all the time you need to upgrade it, so you don't really have to worry about it much until then.

Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"
Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

Not sure what determines how far you can upgrade your keep. I THINK it's what act you are in, as, I had 8 ore deposits before I even got my keep, and could upgrade all the way. Outside of the church and tower I think.

I dont think your ore effects how far you can upgrade any. As, I used all 8 getting the best weapons and armor first thing. Well, after getting the blacksmith built that is.

Eventually, after you've recruited enough people, and you have uh...the woman who accuses you of murdering ember. If you have her, she suggests people to recruit. Eventually she mentions either talking to the dude who is building your stuff, or she might flat out suggest Ivarr the Blessed for a church. I dont remember exactly which. At some point, you can use it for a monastary as well, and the monk will just show up.

It is linked to both.
You need to find ore deposits to upgrade your keep buildings/road/equipment, however time also have a effect because you can not build the church/tower as some of the first buildings - hence it has an effect.
I'm a little unsure about how the chain of events is - but spoilers:

You need to talk to the builder guy, and when he starts mentioning about a church/tower, you'll be able to talk to Nevel(sp?) about what the Nine can use the tower for. You'll also be able to talk to Torio(sp?), and she'll mention something about a wizard. At some point a wizard will appear next to Nevel's location, who you then can talk to - and he'll mention wanting to Tower for research.
You can then - when the builder guy mention this - choose to build either.
However, both ore and time is needed, and I think dialogs with Torio is also needed for the wizard to appear.

For the original question, the way I'd upgrade my keep would wary a little from the first time I did it. I'd recommend upgrading the keep buildings and roads first, then fortifications and lastly keep interiour.
I'd recruit as much as I can fast, train them to top, then get them to patrol the road for starters and divide them up when roads are safe.
This way, when the troops needs to carry out missision, you can do them relative safe without many losses. And remember to upgrade their equipment before sending them on missions. Clubs and clothes does not route bandits.
Get your sergeants to train when they train, and either to patrol or go on special missions. Do not keep them idle. But I do not have overview of the consequences of these special missions or the sergeants effects just yet.

upgrades

You need to get the armorer and weaponsmith to upgrtade aromor and weapons for your soldiers. You should have found a number of ore deposits before you got here...( the shiny walls that when you touch them don't give you anything).

More ore deposits are in areas you visit after getting the keep. I went to the guy just outside the keep to your left and he built everything I asked him to build until eventually he ran out of rock from the quarry.

If your keep has not generated enough money you can pay out of your own pocket which is what I did since there isn't much at this point to spend it on.
