Thoughts on Yoshimo? (Major Spoilers)

Post by dragon wench »

Celacena's thread brought to mind something I've periodically considered. I thought about posting this in there, but it deviates quite a lot in subject, so I'm starting a new thread instead. (Fable and Chan, if you think it should be merged, please do so)

As everyone here who has played the game through likely knows, Yoshimo, owing to a Geas placed on him by Irenicus, "betrays" the PC. What are peoples' thoughts on this?
I see a fair number of suggestions that Yoshimo is, in fact, quite tormented by his situation, and I would have loved to see his character further developed.

Opinions?

I was very disappointed by his betrayal... I found im excellent company and a great personality (Yoshimo in forest: "my thieving skills are of no use here... What treasures can a bear have?" :D ) I hoped I could somehow get him back, but no. Big roleplaying loss there :) .

I'm afraid my opinion is the complete antithesis of yours, I find every second in his company excruciating and many of the things he says completely moronic. I have no desire to anything about him developed.

(no mods - 1st time playing)
First of all, I remember a conversation we had a few days after we got out of Irenicus' dungeon. He asked me about my past and I spilled him the story my father-the-Lord-of-Murder, my lovely brother etc. He told me then that he was going to think about that and tell me later his decision... I wondered what his decision could be, and I wondered some times through a whole month or more full of adventures (you know), but most of the time there was no room for thinking, just action. All this time he had proved himself to me as a worthy member of my party, plus there was no other pure thief mentioned in the manual (i liked his bunty-hunter special-trap-setting ability, could be very useful), plus he was very funny in my opinion :)
Then we got to finally meet Irenicus, I called myself various names for not recognizing his voice, but later on I called Yoshimo several more worse, How could he possibly do this to ME?! (Are you talkin' to me?) After all we've been through?!? :(
Another Geas case came to my mind... It was from BG1. A geas had been placed on one between a couple of murders hired by the Iron Throne(?) to kill me, but he had asked for my help to remove it, which was successfully done. Well, I don't know much about geases, but if he had asked for my help I would've worked something out :D He was saying something like he repented, but i couldn't buy it. I was very happy I had the chance to blast him to little pieces afterwards. I was still very angry to hear what he was saying to me (was he?). But I found his heart and a note on my journal saying something like he could be forgiven if bla bla bla… Well, I don’t know… Maybe there was no way around the geas. Maybe I should forgive him. I still think he was very funny. And the experience I got made me feel that he paid back a portion of his betrayal.
A story with a further development of his character would require his resurrection, I believe.

*that was looong, I got tired!*

The question I've always had on my mind is how exactly Yoshimo was geased, and whether it was any bit voluntarily, or if he was forced into it, or if he was geased without him knowing at first.

From what I remember, i'd say it was a bit voluntarily, though "he didn't know what was going to happen in the future" or "how evil Irenicus was"...

There are some suggestions out there that Tamoko (Saravok's lover) in BG1 was Yoshimo's sister....

I think his betrayal is such a cool part of the game.

Anybody lucky enough to actually be surprised when it happened and have him in the party is very lucky.

Unfortunately, I was spoiled, and so many others don't use him and wonder why he croaks when you get to the Copper Coronet in Chapter 6.

Oopsy ... there were one too many http's in my address bar. :o
Anyhoo it should be fixed now ... I go by Nevar over there BTW, or just look for the (improved) Faldorn avatar, for all your Yoshimo related ranting needs.

I stumbled into some Yoshimo spoilers because I read some articles on choosing characters, so I knew what was going to happen, more or less. That pretty much spoiled Yoshimo for me and I never spent any time warming up to him. My mages double as ranged fighters so he didn't seem all that important, anyway. I only used him once and then switched to Jan.

Like Klorox said, the best part about the Yoshimo thing is if you can be surprised what happens at Spellhold. Finding yourself short a team member when you suspect that you're about to face a few tricky bits is rather priceless :)

The thought of changing/developing Yoshimo seems odd to me, since his demise is an important plot point, but maybe it's because I don't care much for him. I just look at him as a placeholder for those who want Imoen back.
