Ranger Build

Post by Wongass »

I was wondering what is a good build for a Ranger type of char. This my 2nd run.

a. I was planning a 2-weapon archery style.
>> I'm quite confused with this? How does this work? bow(main hand) + dagger(on the other)? when ranged the bow is active the when close, the dagger is activated? or do you have to manually switch weapons depending on the situation?
>> do i need monkey grip for this?
b. I plan putting a level of fighter to give the char heavy armor to fend off melee attacks just in case he gets in trouble
c. What is a good prestige class for this build?
d. What is a good bow? The best I found in my first run was the one with infinite electric arrows. Can the bow be further enchanted?

Any tips :)

a) You can't equip a bow and a dagger at the same time. You have to manually switch between the two. And since that's the case, you probably want to use a melee weapon that does more damage than a dagger.

b) Just realize that heavy armor will severely limit your dex bonus, and if you're mostly going to use a bow, you want your dex bonus to be high.

Thanks for the reply. So, what does 2-weapon fighting archery style give you?

I guess if I can't use heavy armor, prolly a mithril half-plate would do :)

What prestige class can be used in this build? bard/ranger/arcane archer? or rougue/bard/ranger/arcane archer?

I use a two weapon ranger/arcane archer. Bow for distance and dual katana for in your face fighting.

I see, how does 2-weapon archery style differ from the ordinary two-weapon feat? Any benefits for the archer char? What bow are you using :)

They are actually two different feats. I like using the bow but right now it is not strong enough on its own. I forget the name of the bow but it does ice damage with unlimited arrows.+4 magic +4 might

Would that be the bow with unlimited electrical arrows? The one bought from the kid in Docks district near the docks? If not, where did you acquire that bow and is it further enchantable or not?

Whoaa there heh. There are 2 different combat styles you can focus in, but you must pick ONE not both at once :)

You can pick archery, where you get most of the archery feats for free, or 2-weapon, where you get all the 2-weapon feats for free. That's pretty much it. Just pick one style and go with it. If I went with archery, I would not dual-wield, but if I went 2-weapon you could use a bow in certain situations.

Bard/Ranger/AA makes for a nice build. All those buffs stack nicely with an archer, since you are not a front line fighter. You can sit back, cast spells, buff, and fire arrows very efficiently. A wood elf would be by far the best race for this as well.
