What is the best sword?

What is the best sword for a fighter4/paladinx - human male aasimar? Bastard, great, large, scimitar?

I'd say Large - mainly for a certain sword you'll acquire in Chpt. 5

Unless you're playing a modded game the majority of bastard swords you'll find will be cursed.

If its not moded most of the bastard swords are cursed? And most of the best swords are large? or is it because it has the holy avenger?

"Best" is a very open-ended term. But, yes, the holy avenger in this game is a long sword. It is possible using the Ease of use mod to convert the holy avenger to being a greatsword.

"Best" is indeed subjective and depending on your party's make-up you might find a number to fit that. The holy avenger is certainly a top candidate. I also like the Greatswords wielded by the Xvix slayer kinghts. Trouble is you don't get one till late in the game, but I think it is a good one if you are going to take a party through the game and then use them for HOF mode later. I also like the Sword of Souls that Xvim's avatar wields but again the same problem of not getting till late.

"Best" certainly is subjective - would a sword that did 1 point of damage, but had a 50% chance of an instant kill be "better" than a sword that did 50 damage per hit?

For example, one of the best swords I have found in normal mode is "Death's Bane" - it heals d4 points per hit. Great for HoF mode, where healing spells tend to run out long before all the attack spells...

In terms of damage, greatswords will always be better, due to the x1.5 STR multiplier, but for 1-handed swords, the "best" you could get early on will be the Brilliant Short Sword +5 from the Ice Temple Battle Square. Yes, a short sword...

Depends. What is more important for you, +2 AC for using a shield or 5-8 damage for wielding a greatsword ?

I specialized in large swords and regretted it. My fi/pa used greatswords nevertheless, specialisation only gives +2 damage.
