game freezing

Post by fernleyranger »

My game is freezing constantly and sometimes completely cutting out. I downloaded the patch, will this help or is this part of the game?

The patch could help you, as I haven't experienced any freezing in my computer. Though crashing to desktop is rather usual to me, so if you have experiencing that as well then I can't think any solutions how to fix it...

This is a pretty normal feature of Morrowind, even on today's high end computers apparently.

If you are on PC, there are things you can do to make the game run more smoothly.

First of all, turn off any and all malaware scanners... For that matter turn off whatever does not absolutely need to be running.

After that, you can also tweak the game, this site has a lot of useful information on how to do that.

Finally, I would also recommend a RAM optimiser of some kind. I use RAM idle Pro and Fast Defrag.

I have a Pentium 3 and 384 MB of RAM, along with a relatively low level graphics card..(NVIDIA GForce FX 5200) but with taking the above measures I can run Morrowind fully loaded with over 100 mods tolerably well. It's not lightening fast, and load times can take a while, but all things considered, it's surprisingly good.

By the way, which version do you have?
Just Morrowind?
Both expansions?
Just one expansion?

Make sure you grab the right patch... If you have the Game of the Year Edition (original game and both expansions), the installation order is as follows:
1) Morrowind
2) Tribunal
3) Bloodmoon
4) Bloodmoon Patch

In the above setup, do not install either the Morrowind or Tribunal patches, you don't need them and they could screw up your game. You only require the Bloodmoon patch.

Somewhere within that tweak guide there is a point in which he says that higher resolution doesn't effect PC performance overall...barely 1-2 of FPS.
I'm curious does anyone here can confirm that?

I've bought 19" Wide Screen display, but I was playing with my 1024x768 resolution in a windowed mode, didn't wanted to put a higher one because rest of the machine is rather old (P4 @ 2 GHz, 512 DDR 400 & ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB). If that's true then I was sucking at large for last 8 month or so.

And I'm planning to buy some DC stuff soon so I can spin Oblivion, but it seems that I will replay Morrowind one more time for the sake of the visual maximum. I saw some tremendous graphic modes on the official board.

I can!

I have crappier computer than you, and it works fine to me with higher resolutions. The only problems I get at times when I enter Balmora, but that's because I'm using several mods which affect especially Balmora... :D

So, from my experience that advise is true.
