Rift Device Disappearing from inventory during vult of unseeing eye quest

Post by werebeargoddess »

I did a search on this and couldn't find anything, so...

I'm playing through BG2 again, and at the moment doing the cult of the eyeless quest. So far I have the first part of the rift device. But whenever I pick up the second half, both halves disappear from my inventory. The unseeing eye still shows up, but since the rift device disappears, I can't defeat it. I've tried falling back to my autosave, but the same thing happens. So what's up with it?

If the same character is picking up the second piece who has the first in its possession, try getting a different character to pick it up, then pass it to the first. That's worked for me, before.

You do have the official patch installed, correct?

tried it, didn't work.

As for the patch, I'm not sure. The computer the game's installed on crashed a few months ago, and a number of things on it were lost, so even if the patch was installed, I'm not sure that it still is - I'll probably install it later.

This I found at Baldurdash which has a ton of bugfixes:

You could download and install my Unseeing Eye Fix, or: ensure that the game is saved just before, and not after, the Rift Device is assembled. If stuck, there should be an Autosave just at the entry to the lair that can be reverted to. Also, the quest can be finished by getting rid of the Rift Device, as carrying it out is fatal, and attacking Gaal. The Unseeing Eye will appear where Gaal is.

Okay, I know this is an old thread, but...

Some time ago, I installed the patch (at least, fairly sure I installed it) and then restarted my game. When I got back to this point, the same thing happened, where the rod would dissapear from my inventory once I got the second rod. Though, when I went into the hallway, the beholder still showed up, and I was able to defeat it without the rod. However, when I went back to the avatar guy, he would not recognize that I no longer had the rod. Suggestions?

I have noticed that sometimes it ends up in another character's inventory and sometimes it even gets dropped. If you are having major problems try keeping most of your party well out of harms way and stationary and use your character with THE shield if you have it, to get the rod. make sure that all characters have a spare slot in their inventory and watch carefully what happens.

So your avatar wasn't wielding the first part of the rod? Because it's been my experience, that the game expects the avatar to have it, and will automatically place first part back in my PC's inventory, unused, if I tried to get a party NPC to wield it.

The shield? Don't know what that is.

I did check to see if it would end up in someone else's inventory, or on the ground, but it wouldn't.

@fable: I didn't think to check after I spoke to the avatar person back in the temple, (you know, the one with the worshippers who had to stay there forever) to see if maybe it would show up again in my inventory; but no, the first part would disappear upon my obtaining the second part; so I guess, since neither part was in my inventory, the game assumed I hadn't gotten them yet or something...

SPOILER
There is a shield available in the promenade that makes this area a doddle.

This, frankly, is getting quite annoying....

I ran back through the quest again, with the same results: I got the first part of the rod from the avatar just fine (no surprise, for it usually goes well), and, like before, it, along with the second, disappeared as soon as I'd obtained the second rift device in the lower reaches area. Tried going at it different ways - sending everyone but my pc to another part of the map, then geting my PC to pick it up; dropping the first half, retrieving the second, then picking up the first part again; I also tried getting another character to pivk it up while my PC (who was holding the rod) wasn't nearby. Each time, both parts would disappear from my inventory. I could probably still kill the Unseeing Eye without it (did once, anyways); but I wouldn't get the experience from the avatar-guy in the temple (like I mentioned earlier, when I spoke to him in my last attempt after killing the Unseeing Eye, he was unresponsive)

As for right now, I'm not too sure what else to do. I'll try and download the patch coot suggested this weekend; it can't hurt to try. (honestly, I probably should have done this earlier, especially since he suggested it a while ago, and I do feel kinda bad, not following up on his advice sooner)

@grimwald: still not too sure what shield you're talking about; besides, it wasn't the difficutly of the area that I was having problems with, it was the rift device. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

He means
Spoiler
the Shield of Balduran. It protects against beholder rays.

ah, thanks for that :) . I don't think I'll need it for this quest, but it may be useful later, so I'll still keep an eye out for it.

There are a few places where beholders congregate. I can think offhand of three:
Spoiler
the end of the riddle bridge, the Eyeless Beholder's level, and the a nice, comfy area of the Underdark.
Other than that, there's not much reason to have it, and as I recall, it lowers strength by 1 for the wielder.

second half to Rift Device

I got the first half of the Rift Device from the Avatar, but where do I find the second half? Seems like I've cleared this entire dungeon

The second piece is
Spoiler
in one of those rooms (if you can call them that) that offshoot from the larger circular pattern of the level. Specifically, the one in the lower, right hand quadrant of the map.
