Annoying Advertisement

Post by Claudius »

I am all for advertising on the forum. I know it makes things possible.

But there is an advertisement for a film that in the left of the forums that intermittently flashes across the thread titles. Even if I look at the forum and think to myself hmmm am I interested in the add and then click close it is no good. After 1 second the add regenerates. The only way to use the website is to dodge the add.

It is really annoying. It deters me from using the site for enjoyment purposes. I would probably use the site definitely to fix game issues but if I have to dodge advertisements flashing across the screen I'm not sure that is fun for leisure.

Thanks for pointing that out, Claudius. If you can let me know which movie it's advertising, I'll see what I can do.

No problem its the movie, the orphanage. I don't mind the graphic of the light house but. I would prefer it not covering the thread titles.

But what I really think is over the top is that when I click X close for the movie graphic it regenerates again. So to use the site (whether I have either opened the movie link or elected to pass on that) then I need to dodge the movie. Even if I have already gone to their link or even if I have already seen the movie. So I think the regeneration is the main problem. I can see the point of the company that placed the ad that they want their ad to be seen but that is taking it too far in the way their ad works in practice.

Thank you for responding!

There is another one called cloverfield. It is a circle that moves across the screen. It has an x labeled close but clicking on that does not work. The only way I have found to bypass this annoying ad is to enter my private messages which will get rid of ads.

Please. Keep the ads in the box.

I've asked UGO to take a closer look at the Orphanage and Cloverfield ads, so hopefully these issues will be addressed soon. Just out of curiosity, which browser do you use? Is anyone else having the same issues with a browser other than the one Claudius is using?

The browsers at my home and college differ from each other, and I have ran into troubles only with the Cloverfield ad on both. Same as Claudius, not being able to close it.

Yeah hey they have to make money somehow. The only ones that annoy me EXTREMELY are the ones like Pizza hut that get bigger if you accidentally scroll over or sometimes even just for the heck of it. SO annoying. Because then I have to click on the close button because I can't click what I wanted to because it's in the way.

The pizza hut add I tolerate because when you click close it doesn't regenerate. It stays closed. The other two continuously regenerate even when you close them (cloverfield and orphanage).

I was using another computer yesterday and I also encountered a similar problem with the Pirates of the Burning Sea ad. Browsing using Firefox, by the way.
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

question market.com has an add for a survey that regenerates every 8 seconds or so

Edit: forgot to add that it covers up the site.

Edit: this one is like Yahweh unleashed a plague of advertisements upon me :P

I have adblock plugin installed and have no problems with ads anymore :)

But using adblock to block the only thing which gives revenue to this website and still using its resources, might not be the most ethical thing.

I agree that advertising is necessary in order for the site to be funded, and i don't block the adds.

But as with other users, i have found that in the last few days that some of the adverts have ben regenerating very quickly after i close the advert using the cross. The main culprits have been 30 days of nights, cloverfield and and question market.com.

I am using ie 7

Which is why we can report them to Buck, so he can take the information to the advert suppliers. They're not interested in people blocking either.

Xandax is right. Without advertising revenue, GameBanshee will cease to exist. Please keep this in mind the next time an ad annoys you :) .

Advertisements that are faulty or actually detract from the browsing of GameBanshee need to go, though. Feel free to email or PM me about them and I will forward your concerns on to UGO. I've already made them aware of all the ads discussed here, including the questionmarket.com one.
