Looking for help with Morag(spoilers)

Post by PRGFool »

Note:NOOB, first time through the game.
I have been reading some entries about how easy the game is and for me a wizard level 18 it had been easy up until the dragons. I have a level 9 elder elemental, dealan as the hack and slasher and my mini-dragon familiar.
I have spent about an hour trying to vanquish Morag and have tried a couple of different things.
1. after speaking to her, I chain lightning the statue until it bursts normally two to three spells.
2. I have stoneskin on and then use mestils acid shield so that when the old hands or whatever they are called attack me they get about 40 damage everytime they wack me. Usually two of the three die but if the third doesn't he deals me a lot of damage.
3. I then run to the back and kill the flame priest and then do tenser's transformation and wipe out the sword priest.
By this time, everybody in my party is dead and I am transformed with a sword and start whacking away at morag because I killed the sword priest.

Or I try to use incidiary cloud to try and damage her since I have also killed the flame priest.

Normally, when I am transformed she summons an umbering hulk and some other thing that pound me to a pulp and I die.
Or. The incindiary cloud has no effect on her and she is completely uninjured.
and then she casts death magic.

I have also tried to use the chain lightning on the storms priest but nothing happens. I don't understand that.

Sorry to take so long but I just wanted to let you know that I have the following spells at my disposal.
10 Horrid Wilting Scrolls, 10 chain lightning scrolls, 6 time stop, 8 weird (which are suppose to be high level spells but I don't think it does anything)
10 Powerword: Kill(another seeming waste of programming), 10 stoneskin scrolls, 10 Planar Binding scrolls, I have a couple of finger of death spells on scroll and one in my wizard spellbook. I also have a level 9 elder elemental I spoke about before and a level 7 regular elemental. I also have 10 incindiary clouds. I also have 10 heal potions hotkeyed.

One question I have about dealan, is there anyway I can get him to go after the axe priest instead of fighting the Morag's Hands. Then when he went after morag he would deal some damage.
Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you are doing almost everything you should. Couple of pointers.
First and foremost, death magic can be counter with the Uthgart belt or the upgraded amulet from Grimgnaw. There are a couple of other belts that confer similar protection as well. Belt of guiding light, etc.
Of course that means you lose whatever benefit you had from what was equipped in that spot. So think how you want to proceed and equip accordingly.
Morag always tries Death majic, so if you are protected, you can use this as an attack of opportunity.
Casting a protection spell such as acid sheath or other protection does additional damage to Morag or her hands when they attack. It can help more than spell mantle. Greater spell mantle, however, is also needed for the higher level spells Morag casts.
Since there are so much extra equipment in the game, you should be able to equip Daelan as well. He is a major asset in a fight like this. As long as he is alive and attacking, you have breathing room to cast.
Also, simpler is sometimes better. Have you tried attacking the priests with fire bombs, acid flaskes or gas? How about wands? Damage is not limited to the specific weapon they protect Morag against.
Summoned creatures or undead can also distract Morag and her minions.
It is a battle of tactics more than anything else. You should be able to walk in and out with your people intact. Even on Hard settings.

Thanks for the tips

I have the uthgardt belt which would replace my belt of fire giant strength. I think I might be encumbered if I take it off but I at least ought to try it a couple of times.
I have a number of wands but have not used them because I really didn't have to up to this point. One is the summoning wand which would help me after the summoning spells I have run out. (To your point)

my experience is that the priests are not damaged by the other types of damage other than what they protect morag from. I may be doing something else wrong but I have only had success against the priests with what the protect morag. But what the heck I am willing to try different stuff to see what happens.

I will let you know how it turns out. thanks again for the help.

as Dealan says "it is done"

I am not sure which tactic turned the tide, the belt definitely helped. I focused on the hands before I went for the priests which seem to help because the rest of my party did not takes as much damage and were around for alot longer. The wands also helped. I had them hotkeyed but never used them to this point. I used the bull strength to make sure I was not over encumbered which I was when I switched belts. on the the add-ons.

Endurance?

Another method you might want to try, (I go back to the final battle and try differnt tactics just for fun sometimes), is just tank through the barrier. How many hitpoints do you have? If you can find some way to boost your constitution and/or get temporary hitpoints, you can just run through the swords without bashing the statue. I had a level 18 barbarian who with potions had around 300 hitpoints, if I remember correctly. I didn't even bother using a henchman, I just ran through, took about 210 damage (damage stayed around 200 each time i tried after), used a heal potion, killed the sword priest, and then killed morag without getting injured once.

In fact, it was so pathetically easy, I was really disappointed because I was playing on the hardest difficulty with no henchman for half the game, and the last battle was so pathetic. The hands didn't even pose a threat that time around either. They would awaken and follow me into the blade barrier and die. The times I tried after they didn't always die but got down to near dead, so it took a smack or two more.

I know you're a wizard and I've never played with one (I think wizards are too weak because I'm used to balls-to-the-wall close combat) and therefore I don't know what spells you're capable of casting. But nevertheless, I thought it'd be beneficial for you to hear my way of fighting them off. :D
Well if winning is an art,
then I believe it's drawn us apart.

Listen to this man. Also, it wouldn't hurt to maybe cast a Cloudkill and/or a few Greater Missile Storms amongst the priests. For best results with this, use a Timestop to set up the string of spells, denying Morag the opportunity to act while you're distracted. Also, it might not hurt to have a Greater Spell Breach or two on hand.

Have fun.

if not in all the important ways.
