That is a shame. Over here, the BBC and ITV have shared rights, it is good that it is terrestrial tv too, everyone gets to see the games that way

My hubby went into London yesterday for the England/Brazil game. There was a queue outside the pub from 6:30 am

Later, they went down to Charing Cross intending to watch the Germany game elsewhere. The streets were alive with approx 600 partying Brazilians

(and nearly as many police) but the atmosphere was apparently great - with supporters from both sides wading in the fountains

Social patterns of this type are firmly integrated in our culture as rituals. I used to hate my family traditions, they were very strict regarding norms and traditions. Much of it was to create a sense of "belonging together", a group identity thing. Which is so much worse when it's so obviously false as it was in my family.

@Georgi: No, I don't usually support the underdogs, I support teams who's playing style I like - the All blacks in rugby for instance are hardly underdogs....

But I do really think most European football is good treatment for insomnia...

Sounds great in London, and I'm so happy to hear there was no violence between the fans. Unfortunately, English football fans have a very bad reputation. At my local foodstore, they played samba and had the shopwindows decorated with Brazilian flags - turned out the staff are Swedish-Brazilian, so now when Sweden is out, the of course support Brazil!

I like to watch the international events, I don't always have the time (totally missed last European, for instance) but thanks to my work being focused mainly on writing and thinking at the moment, I had plenty of time to watch the WC

I don't understand your crazy university system, but 2:1 is a fairly good grade, isn't it? Are you happy with the result?

Yep, it's pretty good, I'm happy with it considering the amount of work I didn't do last year...

And don't say there won't be a next time...the highest academic degree is the doctoral degree, and you never know, you might like to do and MA/Msc and PhD (or MD) in the future

Or are you adamant you don't want to study anymore?

I will certainly stay in research for many, many years...

Besides, in Sweden you have to take at least 1 additional year of courses between Bachelor and Master, and for PhD even more courses, with exams, are required. My MSc and PhD students that attented a course in neuroscience for fresh researcher or people who planned to become researchers, included oral exams as well as a written assignment (writing a paper in the "scientific article" style).

Well that's how I would use it... Exams as opposed to coursework... as it happens I got results for all of them, but I already knew some of my coursework results. I got a very good mark for my dissertation.

I haven't really looked into doing an MA, but I think generally it would just mean writing a thesis, rather than taking taught courses and doing exams. Depends onthe course though.

'Tis strange, I really don't view myself as an academic, but I suppose I am.

It's very nice when you reach the stage where exams is no longer part of the learning process

I by far prefer writing papers or a thesis than doing the often fairly pointless exams. When I held exams for postgraduate students, I triend to make it more like a seminar, with plenty of time for discussion.
