I'm also unproductive, I considered going to the lab around lunch time, but decided I didn't feel like working, so I went to a street cafe with the hubby instead

lol! Hanging out in a street cafe sounds like an excellent plan. I just hope you weren't viewing innocent passers by as potential lab experiments. :p ;)

breathing is always good....it can be strangely addictive in fact... :D Mmmm.... I love Stilton, that would make me happy too. :)

Stilton is great :) And weather here is actually very nice, not as baking hot as last week.

What? Do you mean the big, earless rabbits passing by on the pavement? :D

No, actually I've been trying not to think so much about my job. I will go tomorrow though, we have a little celebration for one of the chemists who are quitting and moving back home to his country.

Awww...that is sweet :) I can actually obtain it here though. In fact we live near quite a number of gourmet cheese shops and the like. I love the area we live in, but it makes for too many temptations when it comes to anything food related.... :D

Ah yes...that would be it...... The only problem would be determining which would be the most deserving of special treatment.... :D

Good to hear you can turn off the academic side of your brain.... I sometimes have trouble with this. For a while I would watch my son's films with him and in the back of my mind I would be doing a class and gender analysis of the characters.... :o

Now, since my life is presently rather complicated, it is the reverse.....*sigh*

ROFL :D I have learned to turn it off, I exhaust myself too much otherwise. I however have problems turning it off if I'm not doing something active that requires engagement. Watching sports work well if I decide to focus on the game, playing computer games also works well. Best is however to do something physcial, like taking a long walk or chopping some wood. :)

Nothing can dimish one's academic skills like complications in one's private life. For a while we were 4 persons at the lab divorcing our partners, whereof two were our professors...not very good. :(

I don't really watch much sports but I do find that computer games are excellent for turning one's thoughts off most things racing around around in the grey matter. Indeed, they can have a very therapeutic effect, I have frequently resorted to beating up up on SoA nasties when I have been frustrated by something and felt the urge to spill blood :D

I really enjoy chopping wood, although living in a place that has a gas fireplace rather negates the need... :D One of the reasons I enjoy camping so much though; when we go off on camping trips I always ensure I am on wood chopping and firebuilding detail....while my partner is responsible for dinner :D

That must have been really rough..... :( From what I have seen, I get the sense that difficulties like that can be a frequent part of academia. My department is a mess when it comes to people experiencing relationship difficulties. :(

Actually they are stored in your temp interenet file so they would not take any longer to load apart from the first time you load that avatar or if they are changed... :o

If that is the case....do you think there might be any chance of allowing for them to be slightly bigger? :)

Me? i don't know, i was merely exercising my techy nature...it would increase loading times and probably slow the board as a whole down, it wouldn't however slow down individual loading times by much, Buck will probably correct me thoguh ;)

:D That's good :) I usually spam here when I'm frustrated...maybe that's why I always seems so mean ;) :D

The childhood years spend with my grandfathers made me an excellent wood chopper and firebuilder...I did however never learnt to cook. I usually bring dry food, the kind you just pour boiling water over :o

I live in a city, but I often go to my parents summer house - they need lots of wood chopped, since my father has a back problem and my mother doesn't go near an axe. :)

The good thing with several people having similar problems, is that we could support each other. My prof was very understanding about my situation, more so than I imagine he would have been if he hadn't been in a similar situation just before me.

Relationship diffculites seem very frequent in academia, perhaps more so because of the constant struggle with a very demanding job that is difficult to combine with familiy life.

Any excuse to show off your inner nature, eh? :D

Ah...that is what I thought... :) It's not a major issue, it just makes finding the right avatar slightly difficult occasionally. Of course, it is all cosmetic; much more significant was the previously minimal size of the pms. Like everyone else, I am very grateful that this was changed.

lol! I haven't noticed that you seem mean... ;) I tend to avoid coming here when I am frustated or in a bad mood.....If I showed up in a foul temper there is no telling what would happen!  Although there have been occasions when writing particularly gory DF story posts has served my needs rather well :D

*grins* I actually quite like cooking, it is probably the only domestic activity I truly enjoy, probably because it is a creative outlet as much as anything. But when we go camping it is dried food all the way, since it is much lighter to carry.... We tend to go wilderness camping, so how much weight you have on your back is a major consideration.

I think that this is true. Those situations tend to engender a lot of support and it really helps, since you can discuss similar problems and feel less alone. Also, there is a level of mutual understanding and empathy, so sometimes explanations become unnecessary.

I do think that it are the demands of academia conflicting with family life that cause so many of the problems. I don't know what your field is like, but in history little regard is given to anything relating to family life or personal difficulties, and there is the expectation that academia takes priority over anything else in your life. :( As I'm sure you know, this can be quite difficult for women especially.... :(

Heh, I mostly take it out on Dottie :D Seriously though, I have a very foul temper and tend to take it out immediately on the concerned party, so I seldom get frustrated - only slightly embarrased afterwords! :D

Certainly - I tend to go uphill in the wilderness, so I always keeps the carrying weight to a minimum since I'm small and not very strong.

Absolutely. Going around at your workplace trying to pretend everything is fine, just adds to the burden.

It is certainly the same in my area. Neuroscience is a male dominated fields, at my institutions is very "prestigious" and has the attitude that people should be grateful they even got a place at this wonderful university. So it is taken for granted that research is more important than anything else, in everybody's life. The good thing with my dept, is that many people are psychiatrists and neurologists, so there is generally a very high acceptance and understanding towards personal difficulties - there is no taboo in being depressed. :) My prof had to go to the psychiatry ER with one of his kids the other day, and he just said like that, no hush around it.

lol! Poor Dottie.... :D I have a truly evil temper as well.....it is only in recent years that I have actually managed to control it to some degree :D

Yes.... There have been periods where I have avoided all contact with people because I was unable to pretend that all was fine, but I did not much feel like discussing things either. Maybe I'm just antisocial :D

*sigh* I think that despite the fact that attitudes towards gender roles have changed dramatically in the last forty or so years, there is still a long way to go. what I find sad is that you would hope that of all places...academia would be a bit more enlightened.

We also get the attitude you mention...that notion that competition for places is tight, and that we should remain forever grateful we even made it into the programme... so therefore how could we possibly want to pursue anything that is not related to rearch.....  :(

It is good though that there is so much understanding in your department, that can only help.

*Sneaks in and sulks in a corner* :( I am going to have this beer all to myself. Part time I tell you!! *sigh* no-one appreciates the trouble I went to for those biscuits!!

Why is this thread so closely linked with CE's Couch?? I really do not understand the connection  Ah!! I do recall I endured elect...erm..rolysis and Waverly's pills here once :D Oh well. One day, when I grow up, I am going to be a full time biscuit buyer!

;)

How are you guys? To jump in and summarise - camping is not my style, and CE is not always mean :D

I think it is just that CE brings her skills along with her wherever she goes ;) Although you may want to be careful about ingesting purple pills and whatever else you are offered in here! :D

So your idea of roughing it is a two star hotel I take it? :D :p

@DW self catering anything is my idea of roughing it :D (cheers for the top up ;) ) I usually B&B my stay, I like the freedom of self catering, of not being tied to one place, but appreciate breakfast ready when I am, and without the effort ;) The idea of sleeping with bugs and eating them the next morning is not my thing....

Dottie will manage, he has Georgi consoling him, so I think he quite enjoys my teasing :D
Good for you that you have improved - I have gotten worse over the years...

re: gender roles, I must say I have so far not personally had problems with this, but I know there are still problems. A few years ago my institution made a study regarding how male and females are viewed when applying for the highest positions, and it turned out that females needed to have 50% as many publications to be viewed as equal to the males. Luckily, the Karolinska (where I work) immediately started to look into this, and from what I've heard, it has become better recently.

I think people who choose research as a career, will always have to struggle with family life versus work. We chose research because of an inner passion that actually makes us neglect family and other things in life sometimes...but Academia also needs to make things better for researchers.

@Ysh: I'm really sorry :( here, beer is on me tonight. How are you? I am more lazy than ever, and enjoying it :D

The connection between this thread and the Couch, may have something to do with the audience :D

And Ysh is right, I'm not always mean, I'm just always mean to Dottie :D
