Violence takes many forms, and in the US, what I find most troubling is the general, casual acceptance of physical and verbal abuse as everyday, expected occurences. Many television shows focus on violent confrontations within relationships, with audiences who scream and harass the participants. Other shows deal with graphic illustrations of criminal acts, and the violence used in apprehending those criminals. Make no mistake: they aren't being run because the producers are interested in performing "a public service." Their FCC requirements are met by those public affairs shows they deliberately slot in at 5-7 AM on Sundays--that's been the usual "trash time" where radio and tv stations dump the programs they're forced to air to meet the regs.

No, they run the "reality tv/law & order" shows because the violence draws, just like centurions and slaves facing lions in Roman circuses drew the crowds. It's real, it's gory, it has the ratings.

You can't escape the results. I've seen plenty of instances of people going through their dysfunctional hatred in public much like Jerry Springer-type programs. This is relatively new. Thirty years ago, it didn't happen. And thirty years ago, you wouldn't have had motorists getting out of their cars wielding baseball bats to express their displeasure at traffic jams or during accidents. The variety of violence and the banal commonality of its appearance in everyday life are shocking, to me.

Of course, coming from an abused background, I'm especially sensitized to this; but as I've traveled about and lived for several years each in eight different US sub-cultures, I think I have some understanding of their differences. I can draw conclusions that clinically perceive my own bias, and separate 'em to the best of my ability from those perceptions.

Oh...Be careful in South Dallas.

When I lived for 7 years in Dallas, back in the 1970's, it was East Dallas you watched out for: Harry Hines Boulevard, the endless low-end bars. Every day produced reports of vandalism and worse from there. Why is it South Dallas, now?

LOL, I just dont give "The Pledge" that much weight. I think the name is evoking some pre-school militaristic images for you and thats not really the case. It is no longer used ( and hasn't for years, remember, I'm old!) as it refers to God.

Fable - Harry Hines and Northwest Highway are still very seedy and dangerous.
South Dallas is still very segregated(for reasons to be debated in another topic) and can make you look over your shoulder at night. Oak Cliff, South and East Dallas are all about the same IMHO. Vicitims of poverty perpetuation and all that scenario implies.

No thanks. If I want to feel alone and surrounded by hostile natives, I need only walk through any neighborhood in my state.

On the other hand, back in the early 80's I was engaged to a black lady (it didn't work out, sorry to say) down in Dallas--far west at the time, middle income neighborhoods. I got some curious looks as a white (albeit hardly an Anglo Saxon) guy in the area, but nothing more than that. I *did* get more than that a few times when we went on dates or went shopping in standard Dallas malls, however.

Yes I know what you mean. I dated a very beautiful hispanic girl in high school, but it didn't last too long. The high school I went to was 99% hispanic, needless to say that they didn't really want me dating their women.

Her family wasn't too thrilled, but they weren't the stumbling block. Instead, I got a job in public radio that put me up in Minnesota, while they were down in Texas. Black USA families are traditionally very close, and they didn't like the move. Ultimately, she stayed at home, and changed her mind about joining me. We remained in touch for a while after that, but eventually lost track of one another.

Other things that bothers me seriously about the US:
- the "right" for citizens to bear arms other than for hunting
- that the cities are primarily planned for cars, not pedestrians. (small wonder 50% Amercians are overweight, and over 30% clinically obese)
- the view of natural resources Thantor is talking about, US citizens consume the most resources in the world (I'm not saying Western Europeans are good because of this, we also consume far too much)
- the paranoid attutude towards other people, other nations, the UN, extraterrestrial beings and life in general
- the racial and geographical social segregation
- the lack of social network for poor people

Unserious things:
- worst coffee in the world
- unaesthetic, unstylish architecture in the cities I've seen
- the love for conspiracy theories (Elvis is alive, evolution is a conspiracy, aliens have landed in New Mexico...etc)

What I hate about the US:

The indiscriminate sale of firearms - we license the use of automobiles, but kick up a fuss the moment anyone mentions setting up a system whereby the b*st*rd who just shot your loved one in cold blood can be hunted down.
The "cars are king of the road" attitude pervading the U.S. I know of too many instances where bikers were forced off the road by ignorant drivers who felt they shouldn't be there. I understand this has gotten worse with the SUV drivers.
The flagrant disrepect for our natural resources. They are limited, and it's not about the [insert species of the week here], but if you believe we can continue our rampant, unchecked development, I've some property in Romania I want to sell you. National Geographic has some wonderful pics a few issues back. Hope you like the color black.
The "education is a privelage" attitude. It should be a right, and schools shouldn't have to scramble for funds.
The blurring of the lines between Christianity and the State.

What makes me mad ;

1) Geopolitically speeaking, the US can't be invaded, and that has buggered up my plans for world domination etc.
2) By and large, in small places, like Japan, Americans are just too loud.

3) Americans( and even some Texans) are overly critical of themselves. Every counry has it's poop.

4) They haven't put a missile shield in England yet.
