SS,
A boot disk is a disk which can start up your system. It can be a floppy disk (3.5"), a hard drive (yours isn't working) or even some CD's (notably windows setup CD's). As part of the installation of software (some) people make an emergency recovery (boot) disk when the software asks you if you want to. -
Curdis !
So
sorry to all others in SYM to be posting off topic in this exalted forum, especially as it may be pushing the tavern to a premature close

Oh, yeah, I've been using a Win98SE Startup disk I made, but the most I can do is use it to run scandisk.(might can do more, if I knew how). Problem is, it repaired 9999 files, then couldn't repair anymore because the new file names it gives range from 0001 to 9999.
I wonder if there's any such thing as "off-topic" in a tavern.

SS, I can't help but think that the program you were using has screwed up the File Allocation Table(FAT) on you main hard drive. How to fix this I do not know. Reinstalling windows on this drive may work, but I really don't know how much data you may lose. Sometimes paying an expert is the best solution, both in real cost and pain. - Curdis !

The FAT was already screwed up and caused Win98SE to be unable to install for some reason when I tried installing it on the 40 gig hard drive. I'm currently working on duplicating the 8 gig onto the 40 gig again. I'm hoping it'll work this time.

If it don't work this time SS, I would say you have to format the hard drive and do an install from scratch. Sometimes those replication programs ain't all they are cracked up to be.

Don't worry, I'm not an easy person to help, or so the psychologists say.

Well, from what I can tell from what the error message says, the file that is causing the problem is on the drive I'm trying to format and is preventing the formatting.

But B.S. is the glass half full or half empty?
Sorry about the P.C. being up on the bar with it's innards out. Like your foam toothed Crocs?
*Puts dog collar on bar.* I think I'm gonna retire from being a spiritual adviser to the masses down here. Maybe I'll become a whiskey priest instead. What you got? - Curdis !

Curdis.....put Buzzy's jug of shine down and back away slowly.....
Okay, now that I have covered myself of any liability, feel free to disregard my advice if you want.

Okay, and Okay.
I guess it's BYO then. Any idea when the health authorities are gonna shut you down? Maybe if you got Buzzy to take more care with the lipstick we could have an axis of bars that want bears to wear lipstick happening.

That stain on Buzzy's lips is not lipstick.
*points to an unfortunate customer who tried to drink Buzzy's beer lying mauled on the floor*

what kind of imaging software??
by SS,
I haven't gotten around to posting in the tech support forum. To elaborate, my 40 gig hard drive(which I bought last semester) came with a disk that allows you to, among other things, make an exact duplicate of one drive onto another drive. I was doing that and, when it was almost done, it came across a file that caused the whole process to abort. Now my comp won't boot up.
SS, are you using an imaging software of sorts. If this is the case, you may have damaged you hard drive. One of the limitations of imaging software is that both drives are usually required to be of similar size. Heads, cylinders, sectors, etc... If not it can and probably will damage the FAT. FDISK might be your only recourse. I'd check the docs on the imaging software and then their web site for any tech support possibilities. Please post more.
Do have any data that may be lost on your new 40 GB drive in performing a FDISK. If so, I'd make data recovery your first option.
Someone, pour me a drink. Sheesh, I believe we have a forum for these questions.

I guess SS is excused because she involuntarily volunteered for the wet t-shirt contest.

@Mr Snow, I'd be careful about looking sheepish in here.
BTW the Knights suck, Take away the Johns brothers and they couldn't win a game in reserves. Balmain are the best, go Tigers

.
So B.S. that's not lipstick on you either?
