Sounds like it is more like our law now. But I am still interested in the previous position. It seems likely that you could always make a case for it being in the public interest: either the person's reputation is based on a realistic appraisal of whatever fact is under discussion; in which case publication cannot damage it: Or it is based on a false assumption about his or her integrity or whatever; in which case it would be easy to argue that the public should know. At least in the circumstances which spring to mind on first thought

Yeah, but it can be filtered down until it is no longer in the interest.

eg. "That restaurant gave me food poisioning, if you want to get sick, eat there"

Now, while it is true, that would not be the case in all circumstances, and is a rare occasion etc.

Anyway, back to the original case, I move for a dismissal of all claims, due to the person in question not being here.

If that claim fails, I move for an adjournement.

I know, it's refreshing to be honest. I never get to debate things with people except here: it's healthy, it helps "keep you honest" so to speak and forces you to clarify muddled opinions on topics you hold dear.

I'm the kind of person who debates anything. Basically, I'll argue about anything, anytime, even if it's stupid and pointless to do so. I've been raised like that .

Yeah, half the time I end up befuddled, though a quick trip to dictionary.com usually helps that :laugh: .

I hate it when something comes out completely wrong, at least it's here on a forum, where you can edit/respond to fix it... in real life, it's not that simple.

I actually find making such a mistake here on the forum harder... You can apologize and explain yourself but all of that is just as easily done in person. What makes it harder is that regardless of what is said afterwards, it still sits there staring at you; in person such things are forgotten, but print is lasting. You can delete it, sure, and it may be forgotten but that just seems... Cowardly.

I reckon it's easier to make a mistake on a forum. I'm constantly misunderstanding, or them misunderstanding me, and I'm a much more vocal person. So I often make mistakes here. But yeah, it's probably easier to fix a mistake in real life. What I meant, is that you write something down, but before you hit post, you can change it. In life, it's not often you'll spend a minute thinking about something when you are in the middle of a conversation.

Very true.
I agree that the whole effort and thought that goes into typing a post is usually an effective censor, however that also makes the mistakes that do get through all the more... Glaring.

Ahh well, the best thing about this place, is that most people can be rational, and accept things. So if you are to offend someone, they are usually willing to talk about it, and get it sorted, rather than staying permanetly angry.

So at least that's good here.

I'd say the best thing about SYM is that it's the most satisfying waste of time to be had anywhere.
