SCTV was a great (I think, the best) comedy takeoff series that surfaced in the 70's, with regulars who played dozens of roles in the adventures of a fictional tv station. Among 'em were John Candy, Joe Flaherty (who was probably my favorite), Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, Harold Ramis, Martin Short and Catherine O'Hara.

One of the recurring themes was Dr. Tongue, an scarred, overweight, abusive idiot with a German accent played by John Candy, and his sidekick, the deformed hunchback, Bruno, played by Eugene Levy. They'd engage in this sort of conversation:

Dr. Tongue: Bruno! Where are the props? You know we can't do the interview tonight without the props?

Bruno: Well, I dunno, Dr. Tongue, I figured we really didn't need props, what with the nature of reality and all...

Dr. Tongue; Nature of reality? What are you talking about, you halfwit? You don't know the first thing about Heidegger, much less existentialism!

Bruno: Yeah? Well it's not as if you ever read any Camus, unless it was upside down behind a girlie magazine...

Dr. Tongue: Silence your filthy mouth!

etc. This would degenerate into a mixture of abuse and existential in-jokes, believe it or not. :)

Then, there were the bits where Dr. Tongue's so-called 3D films would be shown. If you lived through the era of horrible 1950's 3D films, you'll recall how they went out of their way to move objects towards the camera and away, even if (as was always the case) it had nothing to do with the film. So it proves in Dr. Tongue's 3D House of Stewardesses, 3D House of Beef, 3D House of Slavechicks, etc. And always, there would be madly grinning John Candy with a pencil thin moustache, staring at you, gloating, saying, "Would you like some appetizers?" and a platter moving towards and away from the camera while a theremin went "ooooOOOOOOOooooo" in the background. :D

My place is named after such fond memories.

Heh. FYI, supposedly the rights are *finally* being secured for some SCTV videotapes to hit the market this fall. I know that Nick-at-Nite (of all things) rebroadcast them in the early 1990's, but those were the last time I'd heard of the series.

Anyone remember a cult classic film about two Canadian dimwits that featured Moranis and Thomas as the brothers? That was based on two of their most popular SCTV characters.

3D movies? To me, that is synonumous with headache. I've only seen one, though, it was quite horrible :D :D

Good idea, but I think we'll have to forego it, for now. In the meantime, thanks for the thought, and have an order on the house. :) </STRONG>
ROFLMAO.... :D :D :D

That's very kind of you, I'll have one of Brink's latest concoctions, please ;)
