Hehe. Yeah, you could do, though it shouldn't be that complicated to find the RAM, but I suppose it helps to know what type of RAM you already have...

Actually, I didn't mean "see how much he has and double it", I meant see what kind of sticks he already has (pin counts, DDR/SDRAM, etc) and then based on how much he wants, get the right amount of the same kind already installed. So if I look at my computer and see that I have PC2100 DDR, I would look for the same (or if I do know my motherboard look for faster DDR with the same pin count, etc).

Yeah, you could do that, it's just easier to look at the manual for a motherboard than to prise a computer open, dig the RAM out of its slot, count the pins and then compare it to something to find out what type it is, or so I think anyway.
I had to check my RAM in the same way though, so it is possible, it just doesn't tell you the maximum/minimum memory capability of the computer, that would be in the documentation.
