Most RPGs for the PCs seem to be top-down RPGs like Diablo and I really dislike them. Makes me feel like I'm playing a strategy game sometimes and also the view its kind of limited to me.
Quite true. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing some 3rd person action game like Freedom Fighters and, as what you mentioned, M:I Operation Surma mostly due to its real-time combat but with an RPG feel to it. And I too, was drawn to this game.

Anyway, its a pity most 3rd person RPGs are console based and the top-down type RPGs are exclusive for the PC (I can't imagine Neverwinter Nights for the XBox). It sometimes just makes me wonder why is it so.

It HAS to be Final Fantasy IX. It was unbeilevable. Most people would say that Final Fantasy IX is the worst of most of the Final Fantasy games. But to mme...it was awesome. I got shivers down my spine when all the tragic events happened. And thats no lie, I litterally got shivers down my spine. I never finished the series...I got the 4th disc but quit becasue I was too busy to play it. But hearing that Vivi (MY ALL TIME FAVORITE VIDEO GAME CHARACTER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!) died....really made me shocked. So sad.... I totally regret quit playing it...I wanna go finish it but I forgot most of the story, and I dont want to start over....

BG2, without question.

I was thinking about this last night as I played my most recent BG2 game. This is the one that keeps me coming back, even though I've played it countless times. I continue to return to it because it is so well written, I don't think I've ever played a game that combines so much depth with such wonderfully done character interactions. It are also the many mods available that enhance its replayability.

It is BG2 that led me to Game Banshee, which in turn facilitated meeting some really great people, the writing of collective fan fiction, and friendships I would not otherwise have experienced.

Planescape Torment runs a close second, but I lost my heart to BG2, and am forever spoiled. ;)

Hi all - first post (but been visiting these forums on and off for a long time)!

It is simply too difficult to pick just ONE RPG as a favorite but I would have to say Baldur's Gate 2.

There was something special about that game - it was nearly perfect.
Memorable characters, good plot, nice voice-acting, great graphics (for it's time), suitably epic music! And just soooo much to do!

Still, it's really tough choosing one without mentioning the others in my top 5 which are "just-as-special":

Skies Of Arcadia - Dreamcast: The random battles were easy and occured WAY too frequently which was an annoyance but what kept me playing was the cast - only game where I actually cared about the characters and made me feel sad the journey was over when I finished.

FF Tactics - PS: Challenging gameplay, amazing musical score, complex story, satisfyingly long.

Planescape: Torment - PC: The quality level of writing in this game has still to be surpassed - no game like it since.

Tie - Final Fantasy VII or IX - PS: I can't decide which of these I love more. VII was groundbreaking in it's day, very epic feeling, high production value, great story, very cinematic. IX had a more traditional setting (which I like) and with a lighter tone and more likeable characters, but just as absorbing.

That's my top 5.

But there is one more RPG that holds a special place in my heart for being the first console RPG I played: Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System. It was ahead of its time graphically and conceptually. Sega really needs to bring this series back to life.

And worthy of mention also are TES III: Morrowind and KOTOR. No game ever made me feel like I was really living in it's world like Morrowind. True, the NPCs were pretty dull and static and the world didn't change much, but the layout of the land, the architecture - all of it was amazing and so unique, it felt totally believable. Add to that all the lore and it felt like this world could have really existed.

As for KOTOR, I'm a big Star Wars fan and this game's story (and acting) was better than that of any of the "prequels". As a PC RPG it wasn't too exciting: not many choices to be made and the Force Powers and Feats didn't really make much difference (the game was too easy), finding loot in all those containers was silly, and the game was pretty linear. But I believe this was designed with the console in mind and as such it plays like a console game - except that console games give you a little more in terms of exploration and KOTOR was too linear. Still, awesome story and fun to play.

Playing KOTOR 2 at the moment and have to say the writing is even better than KOTOR but the boring game mechanics and the game structure are exactly as the original giving me a sense of deja vous.

Eye of the Beholder II: It got me hooked on the so called CRPGs. Amazing standard for its time.

Final Fantasy: I didn't play this until around 94, but then I did little else for a few weeks... And yes, that means FF1 on the NES.

Arcanum: Several ways to solve most quests as well as the possibility of doing most things as either good or evil. The first CRPG I know of that actually introduced a role playing element.

Neverwinter Nights & NWN Hordes of the Underdark: I had lots and lots of fun with those. I've been through them several times with various different characters. Also spent a good amount of time doing NWN together with a friend. We were lucky enough to have close to one month with little "real stuff" that needed doing and closed ourselves up in my appartement. 2 players, double the fun!

But in my opinion, most so called CRPGs really aren't RPGs. They would be more appropriately named Third Person Slash 'n' Hack or Group Slash 'n' Hack. They can still be very enjoyable though :)

Yay, another Arcanum fan!

My vote is for Arcanum. The variety of dialogue and quest options depending on your char/stats in Arcanum makes no two games the same and IMHO is the best part about the game.

To come Back on my previous post... I forgot some pointers thoug
My favorits

1. Fable TLC.. I love this game.. and i hope that the follow up ( fable 2 ) Doesnt Fry's its good name.. Now with the gun isseu
I shure hope that they know what they are doing

2. Absolutely withouta doubt POP..( Prince of Persia )
These games ( I got all of them ) kept mixing action and advanture as well as story line in the game... This makes it a Great game that i would preffere to as a Master piece..Bcouse not only did POPTEAR ( creators of P.O.P ) made 3 awome games, they also kept the story line intresting and did not add or left something in the game that might screw it up
For me P.O.P..... A+

Sir, I agree with you that the Prince of Persia series are great but they're not RPGs. They're more like 3rd person action adventure games according to most people and gaming sites. ;) Also, the creators for the Prince of Persia series is now Ubisoft Montreal, not POPTEAR (where did you hear this? ).

Prince of Persia has nothing to do with RPGs. It was an arcade series, and currently it's strictly action.

So now u are calling me sir to, Sir
Ubisoft are developers of P.O.P still the original creators is POP Tear.. This is where i point to P.O.P 1.2 ( the 2demensional very first made P.O.P witch i also have )..wtich comes to my next point

The first P.O.P where indeed arcade Series
Ubisoft itself refraines P.O.P (sands of time, Warrior within, Two towers) as an ARPG
Still it floats on the bountry of an action adventure game but still its an RPG launced with warrior within witch also has the choice plot.. Killing kaileena or let here live...Witch on the 2nd choice two towers was build

Not that Ubisoft's public relations message is an accurate definition of anything, but if you go to their website, and do an advanced search on all platforms (including PC) for RPGs, no Prince of Persia titles are listed. All the titles you mention are listed under the genre, "action." Not RPG.

Just because a game has a plot and a character called a warrior doesn't make it an RPG. If you're going to redefine a word or phrase (in this case, RPG) to mean whatever you want, its value becomes meaningless. It only has content and can be useful in discussion if you apply that word the way others do. Then comparisons have meaning.

Very nice sig, though. Good draftsmanship and excellent coloration.

I am aware of the sites neather is it restrained as an RPG
Even they did make this prenouncement in 2003 with the upcomming on POPWW.. They made this i quote here
Prince of persia warrior within The action adventure RPG with free from fighting system.. Make your own combat style
Here they made the great saying POPWW was going to B the ARPG of the future...
Just because a game has a plot and a character called a warrior doesn't make it an RPG.
On this i am aware to.. But that is not what was ment with it.. Not becouse of the warrior or the plot.. It was launced as a ARPG with a choice plot mixed on the story witch the choices of the prince would affect the ending of the Game...
Anyway i mentioned ur saying on this and i have no intention of putting the RPG naming to further same on this... Anyway ill drop it here and leave this discussion for finished... Goes a loud saying lol
Very nice sig"]

Thanks.. I could make one for u to ;)

I can't find any reference on the Web to even part of that quote you gave, or even to comments from Ubisoft calling Power Unlimited an RPG. But again, bear in mind that many companies will use PR these days to label a given game title in as many genres as they care to, without regard to actual content. This is a new approach employed after the blitz marketing of Diablo successfully convinced a bunch of young kids that the action title was also an RPG, greatly improving market share. That doesn't make Power Unlimited an RPG, anymore than my saying, for example, that I'm a Babylonian god makes me a Babylonian god. ;)
Thanks.. I could make one for u to ;)
That's kind of you! But I'm rather attached to the old text sig I made up. Thanks for the offer, though. :)

One more thing.. Power unlimited is a dutch magazine keeping gamers in touch on the latest game events and upcomming titles

And if u change ur mind the sig maker will still be here.. I mean after working with Macromedia Studio 8 all day i would like some picture tuning once in a while :D
