The Romulan ships in TNG/DS9/Voyager, the big ones with the open space in the middle and 'bird-like' 'heads,' are Romulan Warbirds. However, the flat-ish Romulan ships in TOS were Birds of Prey. IIRC, the Klingons stole their Birds of Prey from the Romulan Empire and worked from there. The ones they stole would obviously have been an upgraded version of the original BoPs. I do not remember what they called the Klingon ships in the original though. I do find it funny, though, that two species that hate each other so much have such similarities in their military. *snickers*
