I get mine done at home as well. Thats the bad part. My mum makes the hair dresser do it really short.

Quite short. I could never stand it quite long, but then it gets cut every 3 weeks or so now, so there's not that much chance of that happening. I just have it kind of spiked on top.

Grow it long. It looks much cooler. Make sure the fringe and sides are the same though.
