I've got family roots in West Virginia. My poor Jeep works up a sweat driving in that state, it's all up and down.
The highest thing we've got around here is Mount Mitchel. I ounce hiked up it on the coldest day in February. Nearly froze my butt off. You can see for miles, once you get up there.
I've never been to the southwest. New Mexico in the summer,eh? Did you have to pack a lot of water? Sounds hot.
