Ok. A car has a distrubutor. The distibutor recieves power from the coil. The distibuter is linked to the crank via a belt. When the crank turns, it turns the distibutor. Inside is a little needle with current flowing through it. When it rotates and hits a contact, it sends a charge down the correlating psark plug wire and causes the plug to fire, turning the crank and starting the proccess over again.

Lay mens terms, it really more complicated.

Because of the way the crank is built.

The firing order of this inline 3 engine would be `1 3 2

Green=Cylinders
Blue=Rods and pistons
Black=Crank.


Gas/air explodes above the piston, and forces it down, making the crank turn. the crank has different angles, for the same reason bycicle pedals are opposing. If they were pushing at the same time, they would only push for a short time.
