All the Prince of Persia titles (including the latest ones) are action titles as what Fable has said. By the way, Matthewd, when playing the Prince of Persia titles, do you realise that they don't have any common RPG elements like leveling up and what not?

You have to give Jade Empire credit! It's my favorite RPG, yeah It was really short, but the sheer imagination of it was just amazing! Not to metion the characters, artwork, the swweeeet story line.
And if anybody thought the twist in KotOR was huge, the twist in Jade Empire just flat out beat it.

ill shut up just before i go on a huge rant about how great Jade Empire is. :D

That explains why all the google'd sites I found were in Dutch. ;) I managed to get through one, but still didn't find the quote. My Dutch is very rusty--not surprising, since I spent 6 months in Amstelveen 34 years ago. :D
And if u change ur mind the sig maker will still be here.. I mean after working with Macromedia Studio 8 all day i would like some picture tuning once in a while :D

At the time of Ultima VI, there were two games by Origin that used the same engine. They were loosely linked to Ultima (basically, some characters reminded of Ultima characters, and your alter ego was the avatar), but set in completely different scenarios. The first one was Savage Empire, set in a world heavily inspired by Conan Doyle's Lost World, the second one was Martian Dreams, set in 1800 on Mars (with a lot of hystorical characters).
Since I dig the book by Conan Doyle, I loved Savage Empire!

I noticed the similarity of our avatars!!! Where's your from?

I think the best ever RPG is Final Fantasy 7. It was my first ever RPG and every thing about it is perfect, but the best is the storyline which I completely emmerse myself in every time I play it. Also any game you cry at has to be amazing! The other RPG's that are close behind FF7 are:

Fallout
KOTOR
FF 6,8 and 9 :D

Me too. ;) I actually got my avatar from some World War II game. EDIT: Okay, I've managed to track it down. It came from Medal of Honour: Allied Assault. :)

Same here. That game is also one of my very first RPG for the PC and I enjoyed it thoroughly to be honest. :) Pity my interest in RPGs flagged after Final Fantasy 8 onwards until it was revived when Fable: The Lost Chapters came into my life.

Oh, by the way, RyanStevens, welcome to the forums. Hope you enjoy your time here. :)

EDIT: Change in some sentences. :)

1) Morrowind - I fell in love with this game the first time I played it, and have continued to enjoy it ever since. Its scenary is breath taking, its non-linearity a tremendous boon, and the quite stunning work of its modding comunity, ensures that the game is never stale.

2) Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn - a great game, made by the interaction between the player and the party. It might have been my number one were it not for certain reservations I have with certain plot elements/decisions.

3) Icewind Dale II - Far less involved than the other two, which is perhaps the reason why I quite like. Its something I can just pick-up and put-down and not think about too much. That and the those weid and wonderful 3rd edition rules that me play a drow druid/bard.

In chronological order:
- Ultima Underworld: the Stygian Abyss
- Ultima Underworld: Labyrinth of Worlds
- Baldur's Gate
- Planescape Torment
- Baldur's Gate: Shadows of Amn (and yes, Throne of Bhaal)
- Morrowind

These games all have an enormous amount of freedom, are not very lineair and are very involving and have a gripping atmosphere. It's clear that the people making these games cared about the product.

I have to admit that DUNGEON SIEGE had the most profound impact on me in terms of gaming interest. It was the first game I played. I wholly fell in love with it. I still love the ambiance of the graphics and music.

MORROWIND was the game that opened my eyes to how wonderful the full possibilities of computer gaming were and is easily the most positive gaming experience I've yet had.

Honorable mention goes to DIABLO II, that addictive sload of a game, and especially to the enchanting game world of Divine Divinity.

It is a toss up between the Magic Candle I and Fallout I. My first RPG was Ultima III but I never finished it and never started on the other Ultimas after that. Magic Candle was the first one I finished and it was then that I decided that my favorite genre was and still is CRPG. Also, Fallout left me with fond memories till today.

Try this link: The Magic Candle. Though I can tell you, as somebody who reviewed it for a magazine when it first appeared in 1989, that it was an excellent turn-based RPG set in an original and refreshingly different world. Given the primitive graphics and low memory availabillity of the time, it's still pretty astonishing how much playability the Atabek Brothers got into their maiden title.

Note that it is now freeware, and can be downloaded from the above.

I think I'm going to make my list slightly different than some of the ones above... I'm going to list them in the order of how much I enjoyed them at the time and not necessarily whether I would continue to play them today or their infinite replayability.

1. Dragon Warrior - This game was the most fun of any game I've ever played
2. FF1
3. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
4. NWN
5. M&M 6
6. Morrowind
7. BG 1 (never played BG2)

From there it jumbles into a bunch of good titles that don't quite make the top list: M&M 7, Wizardry 8, Dungeon Siege, Zelda 1, Fable TLC, M&M 1-4, Diablo 1 and 2 (if you count them as RPGs).

@dar: You've never played Bg2 :speech: . I wish I hadn't either... just so I could enjoy it again as much as I did the first time*sigh* :p

1. Planescape Torment
2. BG series
3. ADOM
4. Nethack
5. Fallout 1&2
6. Morrowind
