Well dunno about Monkey Magic, sorry :)

Actually Dragon Ball also rip a bit from Saiyuki. Check out the main char : Named Son Goku whihc got monkey tail and the "infamous" Monkey king stick meapon which can be controlled on his will. also the pig character - but later Akira Toriyama (the writer) redirect the story after the faithfull encounter with Kamesenin :)

That was such a cool show, I grew up watching that. :D
I was surprised to know the Monkey Magic is/was so popular here. It still seems to have kind of cult followings.

Its one of those things which is just so bad and cheesy that its good. Example, Bad Taste and that other B-grade slasher pic by the director of LotR. Bad movies, no plot, just a guy with a lawnmower and a thousand or so zombies after him. Hilarious :D

If the main character had the stick that could be controled at will then it's definitely a version of the old Monkey Magic series.

I think it was such a novelty TV series that it got cult status, I know I remember growing up watching it, and a lot of people my age also remember it.

Mazin Go !

Mazin.........Go ! Pilder On !
For those of you who is a great fan of Mazinger series you nerver forget this line. Image of a Hover Pilder or a Jet plane docking into a robot perhaps flashes on your head instantly :D

I'm gonna start to recap one of my fave anime; which I grew up by reading some of it's comic :o

Mazinger Z

A giant robot plated with special metal called Japanium Super Metal Z; which can only be found at Mt. Fuji. It was created by Prof. Koji, the grand father of Koji Kabuto. Prof. Koji was killed by Dr. Hell (In Japanese Dr. Heru ??) assasins. Koji later pilot the robot to fight Dr. Hell monters in order to thwart Dr. Hell plan to dominated to world.

In order to work, Kabuot must dock the Hover Pilder into the Robot head - kinda tricky enough huh ? Since it's never said Kabuto is an ace pilot

The early version Mazinger Z have certain limitations. It can't fly, its laser beam can't be fired under water , etc. These weak point was compensate by enhacement made by Prof. Yumi - a friend or assistant of prof Koji IIRC.

Later 2 robots created to help Mazinger Z; Aphrodite A and Boss Robot.

The ending of Mazinger Z is the great hidden episode - so called by some fans, where Mazinger Z was almost beaten by Dr. Hell's monsters. Kabuto was told badly injured while pilotting it. Luckily before Mazinger Z destroyed, a new Mazinger appear as re-inforcements. The new type of Mazinger was called Great Mazinger piloted by Tetsuya Tsurugi - which is bigger, taller and meaner !

The Mazin Saga anime (Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger and Grandeiser) was created by Go Nagai in 1972

Final Notes - Confirmed Rumor ! :
The new Mazin Saga installment was out on 2001 according to some source on the net. The movie called "Mazinkaiser" was released as OAV and have 7 episodes.

Here are some pics :

Saint Seiya (Part 2) - Some ramblings

Well as those of you whose have read the first part of SS post, this part only some rambling about SS anime

SS mainly stressed on the value of friendship - how you can rely on your friends & be there for your friends. Mixed with Greek Mythology it makes a real kick ass anime :)

The idea about how a person improve his/her own ability also shown here - how Seiya and friends surpassed their own Bronze Saints ability.

Despite lots of fighting scenes which is not so violent as Fist of North Star, all on all it's a great anime - highly recommended :)

Interestingly is how Seiya and friends keep having new armor, since the armor they wear on certain saga was destroyed evidently - kinda like they even willing to sacrifice their own protections to fight on what they believe is right :)

My personal favorite is "The Ultimate Sacrifice of Shiryu", where he fights Shura the Capricorn Saint and sacrifice his life by using a forbidden style thus killing both Shura and himself. A great episode consist of 3 episodes IIRC

There's some other anime titled : "Shurato" it's kinda interesting yet I haven't manage to finish this anime due lack of source on this particular anime.

OK so much for Saint Seiya. Now which anime you want me to ramble next ? Here are the options :
1. Yami no Matsuei aka The Darker Descendant
2. Fushigi Yuugi aka Curious Play
3. B'Tx

Ayashi no Ceres

Ayashi no Ceres

"Long time ago when fairies descent from heaven bathing on a lake, a farmer steal one of their robes. The fairy whom the robe being stole by the farmer can not return to heaven, then become the farmer's wife"

This folk tale is popular on Asian countries. I dunno about European or Western tales covering this one, if anyone knows please correct me :) The tale about the farmer and fairy is so popular that Yuu Watase, the creator of "Fushigi Yuugi" make an anime from it.

The story flows as Aya and Aki, the twin grandson of Mikage family are going to celebrate their 18th birthday. Oddly this year, the whole family gathers on their grandfather mansion for this celebration - in a tense look on their face. The next thing is when both of them is given a present which is a chopped hand  Aya unconciously draws certain force upon seeing this "item". Soon after that her grandfather order his father to kill her. Things getting more complicated as Aya's father refuse to kill her and got killed by her grandpa.

Later on the series, Aya learns that Mikage family is the descentdant of the farmer and the fairy. And every member of Mikage is given that "special test" during their 18th birthday to ensure that the fairy does not reincarnate. It seems the fairy has vowed to destroy every Mikages descentdant if they don't give her robe back. But now the fairy is reborn in full power on Aya's body. If Ceres (the fairy's name) take over Aya's body, she got tremendous power and Aya have no idea what have Ceres done.

The story become more complicated with addition of Tooya, Aya's cousin - Kagami, Aogiri Yuhi, Aogiri Suzumi, Kuruma Chidori and Oda Kyuu.

Kagami heads Project C; with the help from Alexander O. Howell, Projct C goals to recreate "The robe" and gather the C-nomers (Ceres gene carriers) to harnest the fairy power.

The Yuu Watase trademark - bizarre love triangle - also happen between Tooya, Mikage Aya and Aogiri Yuhi.

All in all it's a good anime. I rarely give credit for Yuu Watase piece since I'm not a big fan of Fushigi Yuugi yet this one is better than FY :)

BOYS BE...............

Boys Be..............

Usually I'm not into the "Romantic Genre" anime, yet I found this one quite interesting. The theme songs are great, good story telling and most of all great quotes at beginning and end of each episode.

Basicly Boy Be..... focus on 6 boys and girls. You have the horny (sorry for the language) yet dateless guy, a couple of childhood friend who become lovers and others (well I gotta save certain areas in order not to spoil everything here :) )

The aspects from Boys Be........ are :
1. How childhood friends become lovers
2. The love life during highschool
3. The betrayal of a lover
4. The contemplation & enlightment
5. Face the fear to say you love the one you love and accpet the consequences

This anime kind anew since it has a year 2000 new year scene on it. Fascinating how lovers search for certain premonition upon the new century impact on their relationship.

All in all 4 star out of five, instead of its short series (IIRC it's only got 4 CDs) :)

<EDIT> Before I forget, Thank you Minerva for the translation thingy ;)

SLAM DUNK !

Well I've not updated this ol'thread for sometime - blame DS, IWD2 & MW4 : Merc for it ! :D :D

most of anime I civer usually a bit old - well I gotta cover it before it disappear from my memory - Hey, I can't expand my brain memory like PC right ? :D

SLAM DUNK !

This anime based on shonen comic "SLAM DUNK" The story rolls as Hanamichi Sakuragi started his first day at Shohoku highschool. Hanamichi was dumped/rejected for the 50th time before his highschool day and still sulking. Sakuragi known for his gang notorious rep. got dumped because the girl already choose a basketball player (cager) to be her BF. Now everytime Hanamichi hear any "Basketball" or any thing resemble to it he'll simply headbut anyone who say it ! later on he meet Akagi Haruko who encourage him to try basketball. Hanamichi, having feel like love at first sight toward Haruko agree and proclaim himself as "Sportsman"

The story later show how he got "trained" over and over with basic training. And reveal other characters :
-. Akagi Takenori - Captain, Pos : Center, Nicknamed "Gori" or "Gorilla"(In English)
-. Kiminobu Kogure - Vice Captain, Pos : SG (substitute), Nicknamed "Megane-kun" or "Glassman"(In English)
-. Miyagi Ryota - Pos : PG, Nicknamed "Ryochin"
-. Hisashi Mitsui - Pos : SG, Nicknamed "Mitchi"
-. Kaede Rukawa - Pos : SF, Nicknamed "Kitsune Otoko" or "Foxman" (in English)

Hanamichi himself play as PF and called himself "Tensai Baskettoman" (Genius Basketball man) or "Reboundo - Oh" (King of Rebound)

Since Haruko have certain crush upon Rukawa, Hanamichi always compete with Rukawa - yet as a beginner his ability is way beyond Rukawa which named "Super Rookie" (Due Hanamichi eratic behavior RUkawa often called him "Doaho" or "idiot" - FYI Hanamichi never pass the ball to Rukawa !). Later on before pratice game Akagi(Haruko's brother) teach Hanamichi the art of rebound.

Shohoku got reputation as underdog on Kanagawa perfecture, yet this year with the new team can they make real diffrence and make it to Inter High games ? With opposition like Kainan, Shoyo (The 1st & 2nd rank) and Ryonan who got Akira Sendoh (the best allround player) the story will take you to a new kind of experience. And also some laugh with those Super Deformed form expression drawn on character face.

Side note : it seems like the writer is a big Chicago Bulls fan. The uniform colour, Hanamichi character (Which much more resemble Dennis Rodman) and Kaede Rukawa (Which resemble The Great MJ)

Silverfang

Havn't anybody here seen Silver Fang? It's the greatest anime series ever, although it's very sad. It's about a dog named Silver whose father/grandfather fought a bear named Akakaboto (or something like that it was a while since I saw it). It's really good, a MUST have serie.

Ranma 1/2

Here's for fable ! :D

Ranma 1/2 (Ranma Nibunnoichi)
Image

This is one of my favorite anime since the female Ranma seiyuu is Hayashibara Megumi.

Saotome Ranma is son of Saotome Genma. Genma want his son to be the greatest martial artist so he take Ranma on a"Training journey". While practising on Jusenkyo, an area of cursed springs (which Genma did not know). Ranma was knocked in to the "Spring of Drowned Girl," and transforms into a female version of himself when splashed with cold water ! This can only be reversed by splashing the "female" Ranma with hot water. Despite this, Ranma grow into a an excellent martial artist. He is able to learn techniques very quickly and has mastered many different styles. He is very competitve and rarely loses a fight !

While Ranma have "curse" to be able to transform into woman Genma himself transform into a gigantic panda if splashed with cold water !

Unknown to Ranma, Genma already arrange a future wife for him. The girl, Tendo Akane is daughter of Tendo Soun who is a tomboy!. Curiously Ranma also engaged with 2 other girls; Shampoo (which trasnform into a cat when splashed with cold water - FYI Ranma allergic with cats ! :D ) and Kuonji Ukyo. How this happen ? You better get yourself a copy of this fun anime to see it by yourself, all I can say it's very bizarre and funny ! :D

Mixed with Hibiki Ryoga who got transform into a pig (called P-chan) if splashed, Tendo Nabiki who always think of money, and lastly Happosai (He's Gema & Soun master !) a pervert who got women undies frenzy It's an anime you can't miss !

News on Ghost in The Shell

As most of you anime fans know Ghost in The Shell is probably the Best anime ever next to Akira. I've just got the news that Ghost in the Shell 2 manga (comic) just being released on 30 October by Dark Horse Comics. The manga titled : Ghost in the Shell 2 - Man Machine Interface are availiable on comic stores now ! Image I'd love to link the manga image cover, but since the manga itself rated for young adult I don't think it's appropriate ;)

For those who don't like to read manga and prefer to wait for the anime you can relieve your thirst of GiS by getting "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" It's released on DVD and the story time line is before Kusanagi Motoko meet "The Puppet Master". The first serie is avaliable on the stores, yet the second serie is scheduled to be released on 2003/01/25

Here's the DVD cover look like :

Another news :

Ah ! My Goddess !

Ah ! My Goddess ! (Aa ! Megami-sama !)

Image

This anime was originally written by Fujishima Kosuke as manga which later on become anime, both published by Kodansha, Ltd IIRC.

Morisato Keichi is a junior in Nekomi Tech Institute. He practically is a shy boy and also a tech freak. Kinda reminds me of myself....... :o That afternoon he's being left alone in the dorm and charged to take note every call there ! Hungry at last Morisato-kun dial his way try to get food delivery service. Apparently he miss-dialed into "The Goddess Relief Office - Hotline". Soon after a beautiful woman comes out from the mirror of the room claiming she's a goddess and will grant anything Keichi wishes ! Keichi thinking that Belldandy (the woman claiming to be a goddess) is only another joke from his seniors then ask her to be with him forever ! Imagine that ! A beautiful goddess stay forever with you !

The story just get warm up since Morisato-kun lives in male dorm which prohibit female in the drom ! Hence he's being thrown out by his sempai (senior). What happen next ? Well they manage to find a shelter on an old temple thanks to Belldandy. Megumi, Keichi sister joins them the next day and Urd, Belldandy older sister joins in to "encourage" Morisato-kun in his way to say "I love U" toward Belldandy. And finally Skuld the youngest of 3 Goddess sisters joins the crowd.

What makes this 5 CDs anime interesting ? It's finally revealed that Morisato-kun and Belldandy have certain "connection" before they meet in the dorm. Somehow this connection makes things unstable whenever they're near each other. Thus make "The Big Boss God" (Kami-sama...stated in the anime) plan to recall Belldandy to heaven. What does it take to win his Goddess and what connection is it ? You just have to go and see it for yourself ! ;) All I can say the finaly episode titled "For the love of Goddess" is a great ending. After all Fujishima Kosuke, the writer is a tech freak (You can see how the details on Morisato Keichi's Bike and race bike) and rarely write this kind of anime - which turn out to be a good one !

Image
L to R : Urd, Belldandy, Skuld

Image
Morisato-kun (or Morisato Keichi) with his Goddess, Belldandy

Final notes : Besides this 5 CDs OAV anime there's "Ah ! My Goddess Movie", 48 TV episodes and some others ;)

Fun Fact : According to Fujishima Kosuke the correct translastion of "Aa ! Megami-sama" should be "Oh ! My Goddess" kinda like a pun for "Oh ! My God !" :D :D

All right. This will be miscellaneous reviews for me, and probably my last post for a while. ;)

Yu Yu Hakusho - This is actually one that caught even my attention... Yusuke (Pronounced "Yuse-kay" ;) ) dies by trying to save a kid from a speeding car. The problem is that there is no room in heaven or hell for him. Apperently, the kid wasn't going to die (In Boton's words: "If you hadn't interfered, the boy would have had one less scratch on his right arm.") So Yusuke is led by the spirit guide Boton who is like a female Grim Reaper through a series of quests that finally results in Yusuke coming back to life. The problem is that now he knows about the Spirit World, so by Koenma's (the head honcho, so to speak) directions, Yusuke must work and train as a spirit Detective who keeps the world safe.

This is a breif explaination of the beginning, and it really doesn't do Yu Yu Hakusho justice. There are a lot of rather cute bishounen in this anime - (adult) Koenma, Kurama, Hiei, Yusuke... Which made it a favorite for me. Most of the cute ones turn out to be demons and such, but hey. I can dream. :D

Image
Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, Karuma, Yusuke's Mom, Boton, (no idea what that purple thing is), Keiko, (don't know who the other brunette is, either ^-^'), (Adult) Koenma.

Yu-Gi-Oh - Don't laugh! I actually found the unedited version of this anime somewhat enjoyable when watched with kids. I had to go out and buy the DVDs to get the subbed version (dubbed being the edited type), and even then the dialog was in Japanese (Thank heavens for subtitles!). But it's MUCH better than what WB is playing. Ieek.

Seven Millennium items are all that stand between humanity and total domination by those who know how to wield their power. In Ancient Egypt, 5000 years before the present, "Shadow Games" that were played by pharoahs and great leaders by using monsters that could be summoned on command. Eventually the Shadow Games erupted into a war, but a pharoah locked away the power of the game in seven Millennium items. Now, five thousand years later, a boy named Yugi had opened the power of one of these Items. And in doing so, he is thrown into a quest of saving his grandfather and protecting the world from the return of the Shadow Games. He acquires an alter-ego named Yami Yugi, who is titled the King of Games.

With Yugi is his mismatched bunch of friends: Tea ("Taiya"), the voice of reason; Joey, the goof-off; Tristan, the jock; and Bakura, who, also possesses a Millenium Item that comes with a phsyco, homocidal alter-ego named Yami Bakura who wants to take the seven Items to take control of the world. (But they don't know that yet. ;) .)

I can laugh so hard at the edit version of this anime; they did such a crappy job of erasing the guns out of the hands of thugs that it's funny. They make Joey seem like a stupid idiot through it, and Tristan had two subbed voices: the first one making him sound like those stupid dogs you see in the cartoons, but the second one is much better. Tea gives a lot of friendship rants. Basically, if you're gonna watch, watch the subbed.

I just wish they would get an English version of the Manga printed out. If anything, I would get THAT!

*shrugs* No Picture!

Inuyasha - The best I've seen in a long time. A girl named Kagome finds a magic well that takes her back in time to the Fuedal period. She finds a guy with dog ears stuck to a tree with an arrow through his chest, but he's still alive. Of course, she yanks the arrow out and frees him. This, of course, is Inuyasha.

In search of answers, Kagome finds an old woman in a villiage who tells her the story about Inuyasha and the Jewel. Kagome finds out that she is an incarnate of a priestess that guarded an artifact called the Shekong (Not spelled correctly, but who cares) Jewel which had the ability to make demons *very* powerful. This priestess was slain, however, by none other than Inuyasha, who was thought to have tried to acquire the Jewel for himself, but he denies this. Before her death, the priestess shot an arrow at Inuyasha and bound him to a tree forever - or, so we thought.

Things get complicated as Kagome travels with Inuyasha to recover the many shards of the Jewel. They meet other demons - Shippo, for example, who is a little fox girl - as well as a monk (who's name has now left my head. ^-^). It gets worse when Kagome starts falling in love with Inuyasha, who, really loves the dead priestess. Confused yet? Good.

The real story of what happened and who really slaughtered the priestess begins to unfold, and things get a little messy. Swearing, violence, some adult content... It gets my thumbs up! :D

No picture here, either!

Glad to see you back Tammy :) I've saw "Spirited Away" Trailer and some review on a Chinese TV Channel, it seems a good anime. Yet I can't give more judgement since I haven't seen the whole movie :)

BTW I saw "Sakura Wars - The Movie" several weeks ago. The anime got much more better pic than the anime series. I'm still looking for the image on the net so the thread readers can see it too ;)

I've seen spirited away, and its decent imo, but nothing more. Everyone else I've heard talking about it who likes anime loves it though, so you should probably see it. But I think that for example Jin-Roh is much better...

LOL I've been trying to figure out why its so popular. It seems to borrow heavily from Alice In Wonderland. A compliment to Lewis Carroll possibly. But I'd still have to go see it regardless. :D
