It is just the convention, helped along by the fact that Americans have created the systems we use.
And it's built into everything too, just like when you use a colour tag in GB it's spelt 'color' that's the same system used worldwide when creating webpages. :rolleyes:
It's not really a matter of choice, just something chosen by the creator probably and then taken up by everyone in the industry. At least there's not a dozen different spellings in use, that would be confusing.

So, anyway, hello everyone!
Is anyone actually around though? :p

For a moment a thought you had a bad case of religion, but then I reread the phrase about the creator and saw it had a small c. :relieved smiley:

Aye, and the Holy Program was sent down by the Creator of All Things!
And so He saw the proliferation of His World Dominating Software and was pleased! :D ;)

:o Can someone please spam... :p

SPAM!
Before you start double posting out of despair.

How does it feel to be indispensible,Ravager. You are a necessary, though not a sufficient, condition for Spam.

To be honest, I'd just prefer the actual spamming over being indispensable. :p
Being indispensable is nice though.

@Lestat, that's nice...and very orange! :D

So what were you doing today?
@Lestat, that's nice...and very orange! :D
I can do other colors, but I thought orange went fairly well with the colourscheme of GB, while retaining a certain eye-catching quality. So not like Deep Sky Blue which catches the eye but doesn't work with the colourscheme or Sienna which works with the colourscheme but isn't really eyecatching.

@Fiona,Well, I had a System Building lecture, that's mainly covering diagrams (when someone wants their organisation shown on paper).
Oh, I handed in a CV to the University too, they'll help me find a job for next year that's connected to computers.

@Lestat, tsk, you're going to ruin your lurking reputation posting stuff like that... ;)

Ravager, can you tell me a little bit about how they go about this "system building", or post me a simplistic link. I ask because I assume this is the technique they use to make a complete pig's breakfast of my work. I'd like to know how they can get it so badly wrong. I mean no offence, I'm genuinely curious

Well, there's a convention (of course) called UML. Basically a system analyst will go to a company who want a new computer system (something completely new based on whatever they do probably). Somone will talk to the analyst who jots down lots of notes on who gets what information, what departments are involved and what the company needs to do.
Then the analyst goes away and draws diagrams, writes up reports maybe and returns to the company and describes the diagrams, the company points out anything they don't like and it gets explained/revised as necessary.
Eventually when everyone's happy the diagrams (which actually get down to a programmer's code partly) get handed to the programmer who implements the design and turns it into the actual program that the company will use.

Wow, that was a long-winded description. Hope it makes sense. :)

Thanks Ravager. It does make it clear how they do this. As to making sense..... Well it's pretty obvious why it doesn't usually work, in my experience. I wonder why people persist with this? Does your course discuss whether this should be done this way, or does it just dwell on what is done?

Hello Slade. I'm trying to find out something about computers. It's probably just as well you have arrived or I'll soon get a row for spoiling the world that is Spam :D

Hello slade, fiona, rav, everyone. How goes it :) ?

Hiya slade and Tony! :)

@Fiona, well the idea is when the analyst starts to draw diagrams they'll find holes in the description and start padding it out as necessary.
Also, we keep getting told that the same case study given to 100 analysts will result in 100 different diagrams. Which does help a little in the actual course, but I suppose it can be tricky for real systems design.

Hi Tony

@ Ravager. You know how many of the systems they have put in to government departments have been extremely expensive failures? Do they discuss why this might be?

I wish I know what was going on, but I lack computer knowledge....looks this is a keyboard..well thats all I know :( :D

Well I know two things. The first is the same as yours; and the second is that computers are making my job impossible :p I was wondering why?

wow... ever since my question about temps yesterday, the SF has gone to almost zero spam and had atleast two maybe three *Shudders* discussions *Shudders* One on temperatures and everones prefered, and one on some programming thing... :speech:
