Heard a report on the BBC tonight with many Albertans claiming that their soon-to-be Conservative Premier should not be judged by his past actions, but only by his rhetoric. They were riding mechanical broncos in a bar while saying this--I am not joking.
Gah... don't get me started.. Suffice to say, I'm not surprised at all..

My SO and I are hoping for a Tory minority... Basically because it will put them under the spotlight without giving them too much power. Plus, it will hopefully force the Liberals to get their act together..

@Hill...
Oh the temptation...
Lucky for you (and Alice), I'm in the middle of preparing Italian Lemon chicken :D
I'm from Calgary, not Edmonton, and originally an Easterner. I hate both parties in power and am only guessing which one is the most corrupt. *sigh*

Maybe I'll vote Green, just to screw up whoever is working at the machine counting them. :D
That's probably wise. From what little I've heard of the two main parties, both of them are nasty pieces of business, though the Liberal candidate seems to have an inordinate gift for opening his mouth to switch feet.

I'd like to see that, too. A Tory majority government would allow your Premier and our President, two of the most unpleasant people on the face of this planet, to pal around and make it look in public as though they knew anything. I think the Hun invasion would be a picnic in the park next to that.

A conservative vote in my constituency (riding) will be for a man I really don't want in office, especially because of some of the comments he came up with this year. Although most is likely to be propaganda, there's that little bit of truth that scares the hell out of me. Not only that, but he knows he can win easily. Put a rotting sock up for the candidate and the voters of Calgary will put him in, as long as he is a Conservative Rotting Sock.

A liberal vote will go for the current Prime Minister. The leader of a party full of corruption who's priorities change the second they get into office. I mean, you expect some things to drop down the list due to the economic climate and the like, but they changed almost totally those priorities in one month.

Education isn't even on the agenda, which is one thing my SO and I both look for, because of how rough it is to graduate with so large a debt from University.

Strangely, we were just joking about that earlier. We figure that Dubya can invite The Harpy to his ranch, and they can play toy soldiers together.. each having tantrums when the other wins

I didn't like Malrooney, but I could deal with him... At least he wasn't catering to the religious fundamentalists, and he had a sense of humour.

When do you get your next national elections, following this one? We're stuck with Shrub until 2008.

You're more or less lucky. Our governments want give up every time it gets slightly difficult. (Last time it got difficult was over whether or not we should send troops to Afghanistan/Iraq, less than a month ago. I don't think a decision has been made...)

Which means we have to get off our lazy couches to vote over who's going to form a government for the next 2.5 years! Ain't that horrible?!

@ fable: We have no actual time. A maximum of five years, but usually an election is called before then. About every four years. However, if there is a non confidence vote on the government, then parliament is dissolved and another election is called.

The rest is all ceremonial. The Prime Minister walking up to the Governor General and asking for an election, etc, etc...

Considering how difficult it's been under Bush for the last 6 years, I'd say that's extremely bad luck we have. True, there's a downside to playing revolving governments when anything goes bad, but our alternative, letting the idiots in power continue to pillage everything on hand for 4 years at a time, is frankly ridiculous.

At least you Americans can still sit behind your TV's in your comfi chairs. Which is what most of you do, if I may emphasize...

Tsk tsk, where's the sixtie mentality?

Just to add to what Hill said, if they get a minority government, then there is an opportunity for a non confidence motion. If the opposition wants to bring down a minority government, this customarily occurs when the said government attempts to put through its annual budget.

This is why my SO and I are hoping for a Tory minority... It very much curtails what they can do, while still placing them under the sharp scrutiny of the press gallery.
