The lost elf
Chapter 1: Lost memory
Sitting in the pubs of a town far from the wilderness was a young, dejected person, fragment of the folk who drown their sorrows in cheap ale. Not known by the drunks beside him was that this lonely individual had a past not the lazy worker or the pathetic person, he had a past, the on I will tell you to day.
He had been separated from his fellow men, he had served as a royal guard, and the crime was bringing a weapon within 30 yards of the monarchs, although he had saved the kings life by defending him against an assassin, and for this he had been exiled and every day he sat in wonder of that day, what would have happened but he never knew what had happened over the years it dawn on him it hadn’t been his fault, but lust for revenge never came and neither could he kill himself, he was not that man. In his elfin youth he had practised archery and his mentor knew that he would make it to the royal guard but he had expected more, he was the only one who had stood up for him, when the king ruled banishment, separation for all time. Then the silence of thought was broken,
“A toast to my friend here!” Bellowed a drunk, at the elf,
“No, I’m going”
“No no no, me friend we” spoke the drunk between hiccoughs” Yous is staying to celebrate… to where’s ‘e gone?”
And at that moment he left tired of the burden that had been laden on his shoulders, he was going back.
Chapter 2: Return
Although the road was hard Hyae carried on, he began by practicing his archery again. The long bow he had, was made from finest mithril and ancient elf-wood, “‘twas a fine bow” said many people and not many had the privilege to string one. He knew the bows feel the hand grove as if they were bound by magic, the dusty mithril grip fitted his hand well, for as he shot the arrow stuck true, hitting the target and sticking fast; next was his sword arm although he was mainly an elf of the bow he knew the art of a sword-master, he assembled a group of dummies to strike at, and he struck well, now he was ready.
The journey was hard for he had no companions to speak of, actually he had had none since the time of his exile, and the thought of them brought great anguish upon him. He passed no travellers, but he had enough, he needed only a little food, he could gather more but he knew no place to do so around here.
As he strolled down the hard-worn road we saw a cloud of smoke, raising, his last journey past this way there was no smoke, he wasn’t the type to look into others affairs but he needed the supplies, he wasn’t the only one eating out of his food sack.
Chapter 3: The kyln
As he arrived at the village entrance, a flurry of trees and flowers entangling, the path many of the people came towards him so to stop him going further,
“I mean you no harm, I am in need of supplies”
“You may come into our village,” Said a young halfling ”only for a short while only though”
As he came through the dense undergrowth and bushes he saw a sight few are privileged to see, a crowded village, he also saw many people (halflings) about their daily routines, he was most interested in the smithy.
“How do you make such fine ironwork?” Asked Hyae
“We have no different methods then your Elvin folk do, we are no different than you in many respects!” Said the smithy in such a rage, like an angered god his eyes glared, harsh and cold, the eyes of a man who knew the road well and knew that not all on the road were so friendly,
“I meant you no disrespect, I only…”
“You can take that and…”
“Calm down father, he means you no harm!” It was the kind young girl at the grassy town entrance,
“Well as long as he keeps it that way!”
“Young girl?”
“Yes?”
“Are there any little animal that would make this mark?” Hyae asked, showing the tooth marks on his bag,
“You must have a Kyln following you,” Said the girl with a smile “They’re ‘supposed to bring good luck,”
“It’s the reason I’m here, it ate all my food!”
“So it is true, it does bring good luck.”
That night he lay alone in the dark town, but on the outskirts of it where the land was still wild (wilder in than in the town at any rate,) and that night he met the Kyln that had been following him, at first it was afraid, but it soon got relaxed and slept after that to him peacefully,
As soon as he woke the kyln rushed up and gave him berries, the surprising thing was they weren’t the poisonous ones he knew these berries grew only around the Elvin forest. The kyln pushed the berries closer to him,
“Thank you,” as soon as Hyae said this the kyln jumped around, he wasn’t the average animal.
Hyae went to the village, Jy (the klyn’s new name) following behind like a child,
“You have found you animal friend?” Asked the young girl
“Yes, can I store up on some food then?”
“Yes, the store is that way,” said the little girl
“By the way what’s your name?”
“My name is Gen…”
“Hurry up! The fish won’t catch them selves!”
“Grandpa!” Said the little girl; in such joy that she nearly knocked the old man down, he saw them go to the river.
When Hyae went over to the store he saw an amazing amount of food and supplies,
“This is, this is…”
“Surprised? Most visitors are surprised we keep all this food, a lot of food here encase of draught or similar problems, but most is just for day-to-day use.” Spoke the old man waiting for a request,
“Can I choose some for my pack?” asked Hyae still in awe,
“Sure you can, just one thing keep that kyln out of here.”
Hyae set off, encouraged by the villages determination, soon he would be there.
Chapter 4: Siege
When Hyae found the grove, he started looking for the entrance (he had never left before he was banished,) and as soon he found it he entered, only to find the city in ruins, under siege.
When he entered he saw the fortress had been ruined, all that was left was a small tower on the west side of the fortress. A sudden action knocked Hyae of balance, and as he regained his poise he saw that the a soaring bird had glided down to the city of elves, impossible he thought he knew no other way in than the main entrance and he was privileged enough to know that! But when he got up he thought he knew however was attacking weren’t his friends, he also knew if they had any sense they would not be were he was, with this knowledge he knew that if he stay crouched he would not be hurt, but he could not help his kinsmen.
He searched for a mark to strike and one he found, the figure loomed twelve foot high, a horg, on the far hedge row, even though far away it was in clear sight and as he drew his bow he heard the muffled cry of it’s victim, he shot piercing it’s foul heart with such concentration and force that it ripped though the now mangled rib-cage and drove it’s self into the tree next to it. This silent execution of foe continued until Hyae had emptied the quiver upon his back, so he drew his blades and struck a horg (a foul scavenging creature that, normally, inhabit the mines of Karoth) battling with such furry that he could not stop until completely drained of anger and pondered how he was to get to the lonely tower, he decided the way of least resistance (along the hedge), even though horg was there he travelled without being hindered
Chapter 5: Deliverance
As he entered the ill-defended keep he saw bodies beyond help, strewn across the tiles, some with limbs or heads missing, this must stop he thought.
He met few beasts on his way up to the tower save one, colossal even to their race the horg was nearly 15 foot high, ”The larger they are the harder the punch,” thought Hyae as it swung at him ”Let’s best keep out of his way!” The battle lasted till the will had been worn down like an old rag, barely able to move, from both elf and beast the crouched giant charged one last time and putting the last bit of strength he leapt into an adjoining room to the hall and the callous beast followed charging though the door and pulling the surrounding wall with it,
Inside the room was a long-table, but before he could see any more the fiend crashed through and was crushed by the falling stones, the body was green and revolting to look at but as soon it had been engulfed by the falling rock, it’s life was gone, Hyae walked passed the debris and smiled as he knew that Dark slayer and Burning star (his sword and morning star) had not been drawn.
When he saw the next door in the passage he heard foul talk of death
”The one they call their ‘King’ shall be easy to take he has no guard, Ha ha ha.” And an evil laughter rang through the hallway,
“Wait there is another,”
“He has long been banished,”
“No he is here again, the one who slew the spy years past” The third voice was obviously the leader, it spoke in a harsh, dark tone, almost a snake voice, each word said on an exhale, slowly piecing the syllable together painfully clear, yet the speakers appearance was not. Charging in would be foolish he needed to find others; even though he would not miss three targets he would not strike once before dieing, these foes he knew.
Walking quieter than the seasons and softer than the wind, he crept down the hallway down the set of steps still safe to walk on, surprised that the other horg did not hear the giant being taken out, when he looked out of the window he saw that the battle outside was almost over and that the remaining elves lay under a tree he needed to shield them from further assail or they would perish under the harshness of the advancing horgs.
In the halfling village worry mounted as Hyae’s klyn had come back scarred, by the falling branch at the elfin gate.
“Look he’s hurt, that elf he must be in trouble,” shouted a village person,
“We must help him!” Said a small girl, and so they got equipped in fine armour and razor-sharp swords, the were headed for the forest, as they tracked him the found the entrance and stumbled in,
At that same moment Hyae called all the able-bodied swords-men to battle and, at that point in time, the halflings joined the fray, some going for knees some climbing for heads, and then the rested and able-bodied elves joined in, a great mêlée took place and many horgs died the remainder of them were caught or fled.
Chapter 6: A new law
As soon as the battle was won the peoples rejoiced, happy that there life was safe,
“Jui‘ae!” Shouted a voice distant, in throng of speech and cries of joy “My son, you have saved Hynila!” Now a secret must be told Hyae was not a name it was a trick so his real name was not known composed of hy (the starting Hynila) and ae (the end of his real name),
“Mother! So long have I been away that my memories are blurred is that you?”
“Yes my son tonight we must rejoice!”
“Yes,” said Jui ‘ae feverishly “The law…”
“We are under new rule and it is ok, my son” A tear dribbled down her cheek,
“Even though it is different now, I cannot stay I owe my life to many of these fair people,” He answered, gesturing to the halflings “I will stay with them, and pay my life-debt to them.”
And so it was that Jui ‘ae stayed with them and that is the end of this tale.
