I live in Germany and its absolutley crazy here, i never saw something like this in 26 years.
People r going to churches to pray for the dead, entire schools visit US embassys to bring them flowers.
I never before saw so much fear, desperation and hate in the faces of normal germans.

That frightens me.

I really cant even imagine how the americans feel now.

TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES

This, from a Canadian newspaper, no less, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given

recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from

Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television

commentator. What follows is the full text of his

trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional

Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the

Americans as the most generous and possibly the least

appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and

Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the

Americans who poured in billions of dollars and

forgave other billions in debts. None of these

countries is today paying even the interest on its

remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it

was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward

was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of

Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United

States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59

American communities were flattened by tornadoes.

Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped

billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now

newspapers in those countries are writing about the

decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is

gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar

build its own airplane. Does any other country in the

world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the

Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why

don't they fly them? Why do all the International

lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting

a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese

technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German

technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about

American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -

not once, but several times and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs

right in the store window for everybody to look at.

Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded.

They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless

they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American

dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were

breaking down through age, it was the Americans who

rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the

New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an

old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to

the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me

even one time when someone else raced to the Americans

in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even

during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one

Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get

kicked around. They will come out of this thing with

their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled

to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating

over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one

of those."

Stand proud, America!

despite my strong sense of nationalism, i have never quite heard it put so succinctly.
but ever since we we broke away from England, we have pulled ourselves up by our own boot straps. millions come here seekign that same spirit and opportunity.
i think Americans were becoming numb and unfeeling about ourselves, our country and the freedoms that we have fought so hard for here and abroad.
after pearl harbor, the phrase,"awoke the sleeping giant" was used, and i have heard that phrase being used again by the media. no matter what retaliation takes place, the giant has awoken again and boosted the american spirit once again. perhaps today's generations will realize how much we do have to be proud of.

That canadian newspaper isnt right.
4 Teams of german rescue specialists with their dogs along with a large number of bundeswehr soldiers, are ready for departure at the airfields waiting for the ok from the US goverment to help.
As far as i know France, Britain, Belgium and the Turkey offered at least the same.
Its not true that no one wants to help the Americans.

German Police is guarding US installments and barracks.
Its unnecessary because the arsenal and skill of of the german police is outmatched by the ones they there to protect.
But they do it willingly.

At 10.00 AM everyone here in germany stoped working, all machines stood still for a 5 minute moment of silence.

Our goverment is even considering making the 11. sept a national mourning day (sp?)
and that never happened before.

I know we are considered by most nations, even european neighbors the greatest *******s in history, but we are not ungreatfull or forgeting friends.

@DP - I was emailed the excerpt from an American pen pal.

I had it cut and ready to paste before I properly read the content.

With absolutely NO disrespect, it read more to me like this Canadian (not forgetting it was his own opinion) believed that despite the differences between US and Canada - Canada would stand up where other nations may not. I could not even imagine any other western nation gloating at the US troubles...

My instinct to post came from seeing this Canadian stand beside the US. He did not need to go on and critisize other nations for not landing men on the moon etc. This was not necessary and completely irelevant. By BA using Boeing planes, the UK are supporting US economy...

Again - no disrespect intended - I am fully aware of the US' contributions...I think you will see many nations stand by the US in the name of freedom and friendship. :)

I just felt that a better approach might be rather than just describe the US' achievements and examples of aid given(where I do not doubt a word) he may have been a little more diplomatic and not brought down other nations and criticise their apparent total disregard, but just remind them that they have a duty now to help this great nation when they most need it.

Yes give examples of the aid that has been offered by the US so generously, and ask all nations capable to come forward with their support. That, I feel, most would do without question. :)

I don't want to put my valor( opinion) in the parts of the problem(USA, Afeganistão, anyother...).
I know that 5.000 civilians(not only americans) innocents die in the WTC attack. I am sad about these people who dies.

But remember, USA in the past give money and suport to the Taliban group. USA give money to train that terrorists. Taliban and the terrorist lead afeganistão because of the USA suport. USA give suport and weapons to Israel fight against palestinos. Every day people die in the Oriente Medio because of terrorism. I feel palestine dies as deep as Americans.
Everybody is choked, but in the other side of the world this kind of thing happens every day, and nobody feels it. Nobody do nothing to change the jerusalem question. Weak and hipocrital peace treaty in one hand, and weapon sealer in other. As long as these weapons don't be targeted to me. Well but now USA is a target, sadly.
Suport Bush's big retaliation will not help anything, more more more pain. American's fell now the pain of Oriente Medio people feel for years.
This attack is consequence of the creep USA external policy and war games.

Just a heads up concerning the Canadian article. It is my understanding that this was wrote back in the early 70's during the Vietnam Conflict, before we pulled out. I saw this particular article about two years ago for the first time.
Peace.
