Personally, I wouldn't see this as bad. Living in the US, everyday is an experience in watching somebody either in the "realworld" or on television cheesily flaunt their wealth and/or position of power as much as possible. (Who else can remember that television show, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Vulg--Famous?") Having money is a sign of wisdom and accomplishment in the US. It is the only goal worth achieving, if you believe all the advertisements, the sermons in the churches, the politicians.

I consider you fortunate in this respect. ;)

What I dislike about UK

The welfare state, financed by us tax payers, leave UK citizens on the breadline whilst compensating for the abuse by bogus asylum seekers and people who claim benefit and 'work on the side'

It rains all the time

We loan large amounts to third world countries when charity should start at home and we have hundreds of elderly dying each year through hypothermia because they cannot afford heating bills

NHS waiting lists are too long and staff so underpaid they cannot afford to live in the cities they work in

The steel works/mining/wool and car industries have died a slow death. The natural gas industry is dictated to by OPEC. We have no national industry left.

Football hooligans

We are one of a very few Western nations that still fear terrorism on a too regular basis

Social Services are so tied up in bureaucracy children at risk are not identified soon enough

Our supposedly cosmopolitan country is becoming completely divided, with racial hate and violence becoming more of a way of life for too many people

A doctor already disciplined by the medical council can go on to murder nigh on 300 people

The Government and shadow cabinets are so obsessed with Europe they miss what is happening on their own doorstep

More and more women (and men!) are forced back to work after having a family for financial reasons leaving the most crucial years of your children’s life in the hands of others when they would prefer to stay at home

Ofsted are now taking on pre-school care and insisting all carers of children under 5 should hold NVQ level 3. I would much prefer the carer(s) of my children remembered their favourite books/songs and recognised when they needed a cuddle than have letters after their names. Now, apparently, pre-school carers are not allowed to have any physical contact with the children which includes comforting a distressed baby or sitting a child on their knee to read a book. Pre-school is supposed to be an extension of the home not formal education.

So called ‘Liberal’ attitudes placing great emphasis on being politically correct…

Your vote in a general election is not worth the paper it is written on

With VAT on fuel it is only a matter of time before they tax kids clothes and staple foods

Excise duty

What I like about the UK

It is my home and home to my family. Despite all it's faults - there are worse places to live... ;)

But it is still home to Bristol... :) :D

But seriously i agree with a large amount of your Yshania's post. The UK is becoming more and more effulent but still it holds a large degree of crime and degredation, something must be wrong.

ps. if every country in the world is in debt, who exactly are they in debt to, and who is claiming that debt?

@ Mr Sleep - I do believe it is pronounced 'Brizzul'! ;)

Oh - and I did forget my biggest gripe after excise on cigs and booze - PETROL PRICES!!!

i agree wntirely, being in the country and needing to drive to get to work..... as you might imagine 1/2 of my wage packet goes on fuel :(

@Yshania I agree with a lot of your gripes... But IMO tax on cigarettes is fair play, in fact I wish it was illegal to smoke in public places...

The annoying thing about petrol tax, is that the government say it's to encourage people to use public transport etc... when they really need to be improving public transport so that it's actually reliable

@Georgi - I don't know where you live but after spending over 13 years commuting by train in London I am actually now relieved to pay for petrol! It may sound contradictory but if you are talking about getting to work, petrol is cheaper than trains (even when I was driving a Rover 827i Sterling!) it is more comfortable, you can listen to your music as loud as you like without complaint and you don't have to have your nose in someone's sweaty armpit on a crowded carriage.

Needless to say - petrol is still way expensive - especially as there are no obvious signs of the revenue being spent on our roads.... ;)

also if you look at the prices of the fuel in the rural areas compared to cities it is a lot more expensive, out in the country where it is essential to have a car they increase the prices, this suggests to me that they are in government for profit and not the good of the people. (grumble)

@Mr Sleep

I visited Marlborough in Wiltshire last year and unleaded was 104p per litre when everywhere else in the country we were complaining at 85p. That garage has since gone out of busines... ;)

@Sleep, if you intended that pun on "affluent/effluent," my hat's off to you, even though I don't own one. :D

Hmmm. Yshania, I sympathise entirely with your views. Check out some old threads, I'm building a Spam-army to smite world governments. Try it, you might like it. :D
