I like a lot of poetry so it's hard to choose, but here goes:

Tide


Lovers
and lesser men
have gone on and on
endlessly and persuasively

About the anguished
half-choked
sputtering cry
the circumscribed tide
makes---its hiss
and last sigh---
before it collapses
on the white sand
and dies

I note only
what happens
to the bright refractions of light

When the dashed water
lies momentarily low
slow-moving and still
on its dull supporting porous table

sorry fable, i loved english and hated literature, fortunatly the lit wasn't on the semester exams, or i would still be in school!

Seamus Heaney, anyone?

I know many poems in Japanese, whether originally written in or translated into Japanese, so I'm not much of help (I don't mind posting in Japanese, though... ).

Same apply to other readings, like Shakespear. I read most of his work in translation when I was 14-5, and have no energy to read them all in English again now...

Not in English, I'm afraid. I like them in Japanese, because we could loose either meaning or ryhthm Haiku has when we translate it. I love Tanka (older than Haiku. It has 7-5-7-7-7 syllables).

BTW, there are a couple of Haiku contests in this forum somewhere, if you are interested in.
