For my first really good run in the game, this is my party.
Me - Fighter.. 4 points in bow and taking them down fast. Dex score at 20 (Elf+Tomb), str at 19(tomb), 2nd weapon halbred, best weapon in the world, cant beleive there arent any "special" versions in the game... ohh well, BG2 will help me out.
Minsc - The cannon Fodder
Safana - How can you resist her!?!
Coran - Needed a guy who could shoot a bow.. and hold his own. Plus, he is hitting on Viconia... that cant lead to anything good.
Viconia - Mandatory, never played with out her.
Edwin - I cant seem to play any BG game without him... He's now got a int score of 19, making him even more powerfull and friendly towards the rest of the party.
I would love to have keept Jaheira, Imoen.. but I just find the other NPC's so much more interresting after have played BG2 quite a few times

Ohh.. the most terrible thing happened right after I saved her... she wanedered right into a band of Gnolls, I think she wanted to releive her self in some near by bushes... most terrible!... After that I was sooo heartbroken I just HAD to take Edwin with my as my nr. 1 mage. *sniff*
On a side note, I have just finished the game... damn that last battle... its was my army Vs Sarevok and his goons. I think I had about 20 skeleton warriors and after that Edwin fired of monstersummoning 2 again and agian... A truely epic battle and ending to a most excellent game...

I played a Chaotic Evil conjurer. Had a reputation of around 4.
Used also Kagain, Viconia, and Imoen.
Kagain just to buy me time to cast my spells if a melee enemy came forward. Viconia for healing. Imoen for opening locks and disarming traps.
Before using tomes, my stats were
str 18
con 16
dex 18
int 18
wis 18
cha 4
Was able to kill everyone pretty easy with volleys of fireballs, web, and cloudkill. Except for the "protect the dukes" fight. I don't see why I had to protect them anyways being a chaotic evil character. All I wanted was to kill Saravok...wanted to fireball the whole room...dukes and all the noblemen can die with him.
It is fun dominating fights with a mage and careful spell casting/selection than just using lots of fighters. I like to solo some fights just to feel powerful. I have trouble doing that with other characters.

Hmm.. in my first run of the game (see above) I thought mages where really poor at the start and middle of the game. It took forever for edwin to get anywhere. Guess that's some'n to look into for my next game.

Serves 'em right for siding with him in the first place.

soloing is the best
especially when your a mage, summoning about 50 monsters and providing ludicrously colourful battles with the arsenal of spells - made me feel
reeeaallly powerful when I fought those three bounty hunters above the exit of the Naskel Mines.

And btw - if you play BG2 then share your party preferances here.

I was in the Duchal Palace when the dopplegangers attacked. After defeating the shape-shifting fiends, I tried to prosecute Sarevok for his deeds, but I forgot to bring the proof with me (the papers). I ended up the dukes, but in the end, I succumbed.
Anyways, my party: Me(Dwarf fighter/cleric)
Kivan
Khalid
Coran
Imoen
Dynaheir

I'm going through BG again, and having lots of fun with characters I haven't played before. (For some reason, usually can't turn down Minsc, but I've been strong this time.)
PC (Vivienne - N Bard)
Imoen (dualled to Invoker at level 2)
Kivan (our best tank)
Safana (thief - > mage at level 5, fun girl)
Coran (tank/thief - a man who likes life)
Viconia (healer)
So far the party is happy, though I may trade Kivan for Edwin if he keeps saying 'May Viconia's soul rot in hell.' Can't they just all get along?

Funny thing with my party is, Corans keeps telling Viconia that she is the most beautifull creature he has ever seen and Viconia keeps telling him that in the underdark etc etc.
Cracks me up

My party from my speed-run game had the following at final save:
Jonathan - protaganist - LG human fighter 19/19/19/19/9/13 (planned dual-class to mage)
Ajantis - LG Human Paladin
Kivan - CG Elf Ranger
Yeslick - LG Dwarf Fighter/Cleric
Coran - CG Elf Fighter/Thief
Xan - LN Elf Mage
I chose Xan, rather than keeping Dynaheir (who, being good, would have fit better) because I didn't wan't to suicide Minsc. Probably should have kept Dynaheir and done the other room trick on Minsc.
This party ended up in the 90k range, and easily trounced Sarevok& friends.
