Dragon scales do not even have to be modded. I've played with a multiplayer party once with a dwarf and a half-orc as tanks, they kick butt in dragon scale armor.

EASY WAY TO KILL DRAGONS!!!
Just have a cleric throw up Magic Resistance (yes, the blue colored spell that looks like a face going into a sideways buttcrack) on the DRAGON! It puts their magic resistance to 2% x caster level. This will drop anythings resistances down enough to where you can magic missle the hell out of it. I killed the black dragon in suldanesslar with this technique. I had me (Fallen archer), Minsc, Valygar, Imoen, Aerie, and Edwin all in my party. All I had to do was throw some normal buffs (bless, prot. from evil 10' radius, chant, etc.) for closure then send in a SINGLE air elemental (Ring of Air Control) to get hit by the wing buffet, follow up with all the melee team (I equiped a couple of swords to my archer just for the extra melee) consisting of me, minsc, and valygar, then have aerie run up to the dragons back and cast the spell, then let the melee fight him and keep attention while the casters sat back each with 2-4 magic missles in their book and went to town.
NOTE:
For Firkraag, you can just say that you'll be back later, use the magic resistance (he won't become hostile when you use on him), then force attack or talk attack.
This technique works with almost all bosses that you can actually get up to and use on and has VERY impressive results.

dooms dont stack. Try casting Greater Malison on him.

But still cast one Doom. It's a cheap level 1 divine spell, it never misses, it travels to the target quickly...and it works!

As soon I can cast the various spell triggers Lower Resistance, GM are often in it, followed by a ... I forgot its name, it is the Lvl 1 spell just left of MM. At the levels you get contingencies and triggers it has a chance to stun or even kill your opponent. I got the Bird (Dragon, not herself) of the Saerileth Mod with that trigger/contingency once just as it turned red. Only reading the text afterwards did I understand what had happened; while my mighty meleers (including <CHARNAME> stormed forwards to deal death to the foul carrion-bird a trigger or contingency went off and it failed its Restistance Roll, much to our surprise...
BTW, Firkraag is a Great Red of ancient age and lineage, he should be well-nigh impossible to kill by anyone but the most powerful party IMO. Reds are the most fearsome creatures of the AD & D Universe.

Of all the dragons in BG2 I think he is the most easy one to kill. I hate the Shadow Dragon, and never even tried to kill the dragon in the Underdark, don't even know if you can kill her.

It's interesting how different people think different dragons are the hardest.
Personally, the only dragon that gave me any trouble on my last run through was Draconis in ToB because he is hasted upon hasted and goes ethereal.
Of course on my first play, they all handed me my butt, in turn

I agree about draconis but I was talking only about the normal game not ToB

Try out Ira'Kiou'Dneg
Generaly dragons are piece of cake with a spell trigger (3x lower resistance), when tanked by a mage protected with PFMW. WHEN everybody is protected from the element that the dragon uses as breath weapon.
It is important that you dispell his buffs (most of the time its stoneksin + haste) and be prepared for drastic positional changes when wing buffet strikes.
I believe there was a spell that stopped wing buffed (cause of a bug) but i can't recall which one it was.

Just killed him with my Fighter/Thief, Minsc, Imoen, Jaheira and Anomen. Everyone in the party (well, almost, Imoen is like 50.000 XP or so behind the others) just passed the 3.000.000 XP mark.
Buffs:
Protection from Evil 10' Radius.
Chant.
Chaotic Commands on Minsc, Protagonist and Anomen.
Resist Fear.
Position Anomen, Protagonist and Minsc around Firkraag in a triangle. Tick him off. Imoen pelts him with an initial Breach and goes to work with Lower Resistance. His breath attack will invariably send someone next to him rolling across the floor. Don't mind it, it can't really be avoided, just get up as quickly as possible and engage him. I keep Imoen and Jaheira out of range, and let them fire away at him with spells and ranged. Whenever he throws up some kind of defences, Imoen Breaches him. Jaheira dishes out different Insect spells and so on, when Firkraags magic resistance has been sufficiently reduced.
In my experience, Firkraag will usually pick someone and hammer down on him/her, but I found that health potions in a steady interval could keep the targeted partymember alive, while the others go to work on him. The party can take some abuse, except Imoen. But that's not really an issue, since she's firing away from a safe distance. With this relatively easy approach he dropped in something like 30 seconds.
A note on the Dragon Slaying items: I've never found them to be of much use. They give you resistances that you can get through buffing (or maybe you already have them) anyway. My main weapons, like Celestial Katana, Flail of Ages, Firetooth Dagger and so on suits my needs just fine in my battles against Firkraag.

Yes Ira'Kiou'Dneg is IMO the hardest fight in the game after the cheesy Ilyich and Faldorn (note I write from Tactics mod perspective), though the Poison party of snakes and Ritual one may rank as high. Ira'Kiou'Dneg is the one to have given me most trouble.
Firkraag should in fact be harder. As I said, Big reds are supposedly the most powerful entities in The Realms after the Gods.
