but when the need arises, you can become a full spellcaster...
And even if you play more like a fighter, your mage side still keeps
the contingencies and triggers...

Why you need an arena to fight monsters, just clauconsole any you like.
As for the arena for PvP combat, why don't you play Diablo 2 that is specially fitted for that.
Baldur's gate I think is a different game, it's role playing, interaction with others (PB in multi, various NPC).
I would like some more option on the story depending on your decision: (ie. taking evil path leading to different situation and different story developement etc.).
If I want to just hack and slash I play Diablo that is the best game for it!!!

I play D2 and LOD a lot, but SOA and TOB also has very good potential to do similar things. A BG arena will be able to cast spells, set traps and backstabs. How cool will that be!
