As far as I know the if the ring is there or not has to do when you bought the game. The time I bought the game and when I played there was no ring. But like I said I did read some where it has to do when you bought the game. I think you can tell the version of your game in the note pad.

can there be different versions of the game? I am from europe...can that have somthing to do with it???
I have never found the ring either, nor I have I downloaded any patches, and I'm living in Southwest US. I've tried with and without TotSC installed and still didn't find it. I've used a Ranger, a Thief, 2 Fighters, and a Mage PC and still couldn't find it. :(

I have the European version of the game and TotSC installed. I also found a patch on the TotSC disk, which I installed as well. With BGI, TotSC and the patch on the TotSC disk installed (no other patches or MODs) I did find the ring of Wizardry at the Friendly Arm Inn.

I haven't found the ring of wizardy yet, but i found the ring of Protection +1 and the "coordinates" didn't match... hmm...what about that than, does the ring of wizardy lie at a tree? or something like that? could anyone describe the place for me? please... :(

In his walkthrough, Dan Simpson describes the coordinates for the ring's location as x=2555, y=3759. It's almost dead-center at the bottom edge of the Friendly Arm Inn Map. The best way to describe where it's at: From where you first enter the Friendly Arm Inn area, walk toward the right along the bottom edge. Just past the rock outcropping, there is a bluish-green evergreen tree at the bottom of the map. In front of that tree, in a patch of dirt just behind two rocks, is the container holding the ring. Move your cursor very slowly in that vicinity, since the container is very small and easy to miss.

Definitive way of finding the ring:
  • Download Infinity Explorer and install it.
  • Run Infinity Explorer and open Baldur's Gate.
  • Expand the Areas directory by clicking on the + next to it and then do the same for AR2300 (you may need to load the correct CD).
  • Click on the + next to Containers.
  • Under it should only be Container 1 - click on it. This will move the map picture to the container location as well as make several information tabs available.
  • Click on the Items tab beneath the map picture. You should see the ring of Wizardry in the list.

This thread maybe years old, but the problem still exists. I have the Infinity Explorer and can see the Container. But when I go into the game and try click it, I can't find it. I go pixel by pixel and it still doesn't work. BTW I am using TotSC w/ latest patch and the Ease of Use Mod. (Soloing as F/M/T)

Wow, this has gotta be a record bump. I think the problem exists if you've patched your game, or if you had the second printing of the old 5 disc set. Save your game, reinstall, don't patch it, and then go get the stupid ring. You can patch it afterwards and I don't think it'll affect your game at all.

Or just edit it into the game, you know it should be there!

No no no no and no.

I've got the original 5 CD set of the game. And even patched, I can still find the Ring of Wizardry at the Friendly Arm Inn. Even with Ease of Use mod and TotSC installed the ring is still there. So something else must be going wrong there!

Cheers,
TGHO

Well there were two "printings" of the 5 CD version of the game. One had the ring and one didn't. I have the one that lacks the ring and it's not there whether you patch the game or not.

I have a 5 disc set I got a long time ago, before BG2 came out. I don't know which 'printing' it is though.
I can use Infinity Explorer and see the container with the ring, but as soon as I load the game and look, there is no container.

Does anyone know if IE only looks at the original game files and not override folders? Maybe something got in those folders that I am not aware of.

Here is the the patch history I remember doing after installation:
-Installed BG1
-Installed latest BG1 patch
-Installed DX8 patch for BG1
-Installed TotSC (when I got tired of trying to figure out which items were unidentified)
-Installed ToSC patch
-Installed Ease of Use Mod

I'm currently at work, and cannot validate whether the above is actually true. Has anybody tried this? Seeing that the "tree at the Friendly Arm Inn" trick doesn't seem to work for everybody.

It is :)
and applepie tastes very good.

(the above sentence was only meant to reach the 10-words per post limit which I, personally, consider useless. One could argue that this long explanation makes the sentence superfluous, but there can't be an explanation without something to explain, can there?)

There should be a little knot in a pine tree, check the gb walkthrough to see what area the tree is in. Its in the knot in a pine tree, just keep moving your mouse around it until you find it, it took me a minute to find so I'm thinking you're not looking in the right place because getting your cursor over it is tricky.

Can a MOD please close this thread or something because it getting bumped after two years and then another few months later is a bit ridiculous. Besides all groundbreaking work on the subject has already been posted, and verified by various sources.
