Firkraag wasnt too hard for my archer,
my party was something like this:
Me - Half Elven Archer
Mazzy
Anomen
Jan
Keldorn
Korgan
Casted a breach or 2 with Jan,
and let Keldorn Mazzy and Korgan tank him, while my archer
shot that mage thats with Firkraag, took me only like 3 shots.
After the mage was dead my tanks were barely alive, but luckily my Archer had boots of speed, I sent Jan and Anomen to near the zone end, so Firkraag wouldnt agro him, and solo'd Firkraag with my archer.
The toughest battle was.. I think the first slaver ambush when travelling through Athkala
![Smile :)](./images/smilies/)
, I reloaded a zillion times..
but also the battle when you finally get back to Athkala, and that fish guy waits there to get the silver blade thing back..

For me several battles were hard at the beginning: Mencar, first room of the slavers in the slums, first Dragon (Shadow); the Planar sphere had some difficoult battles; Kamgaax and Shangalar were good fight too.
But I think all depends on your level: Shadow dragon and all his quest was hard for me because I was very low level; Firkrag and his quest was medium difficoult and the last dragon was just breeze (I killed it with my inquisitor on toe to toe melee fight).

I think the whole planer sphere is tough as.. that first halfling mage sticks out.. so does the cheif wizard guy at low lvl its so hard not to take a few deaths from even 1 horrid wilting
Aside from the basics like demi lich firkraag and twisted rune here are my bets for hard fights
I think the Alhoon is one of the toughest things in the game the way he pulls that permanent domination, chars just leave the party and go hostile!
Those three Rakshasas in the druid quest.. they are severe if your low lvl as theres just no room to get away from the cloudkills
The one that I think takes the cake though is gaurded compound... the first time I did it I lured them down 1 at a time and STILL had to relaod.. does that minotour EVEr die!!!
Spoiler???
If I solo a barbarian or the like, going to the graveyard early for that loun stone and nammara.. the spiders are almost impossible without a mage and the crypt king is really hard to beat in a straight fight
Btw I found flame arrows really did a number on those greater wolfwere.. not sure why or how but they just, they nailed mr shadows dragon to at major lvl I think they do some 36 d6 fire and peircing damage a peice, 3 in a sequencer is some 108 to 608 damage

My hardest fight was Kensai/Thief & Cleric/Mage vs. Drizzt & his friends and also two final WK fights which were extremely difficult... the server had to revive me 3 times in the middle of the battle

I found Firkraag pretty easy. With my Improve Hasted Human Fighter in Slayer form that is...
Draconis was pretty tough for me (if ToB counts) and I had a pretty rough time with Torgal if I remember correctly.

Kangaxx was awful til I figured out the protection from magic thing.
But the greatest battle was with myself when I had to turn down sleeping with the drow in the underdark so I didn't "offend" Viconia's sensibilitys.

One of the tougher battles in SoA was, quite in the beginnig, the ambush Tavona (vampire) sets up for you at the Copper Coronet if you side with the Shadow Thieves. It might sound a little strange, but my mage's (Nalia, at that point) spells were exhausted and only one of my chars had a weapon that could actionally damage her. You can't simply run away because she's so damn fast. That was REALLY annoying.

the setting traps before the dragon is hostile is considered somewhat cheesy, not that i'm saying how anyone should play their game... it's no different from the cloudkill cheese actually
my hardest battle was to tell to the daughter of the matron mother (what's her name) that i was an eunich so i wouldn't hurt aeries feelings on my first run through....
one battle that got my bloodpressure rise was the drow party in the underdark, near the "prison" thingie, i didn't have cloak of reflection, since i missed sahuagin city (my first run through) that took some time to crack

I am surprised no one has mentioned BEHOLDERS!!! They give me the creeps. I remember when I first did the cult of the unseeing eye thing and down in the Amanuator area when you cross that bridge, man that took me a while to crack that one. Of course you can that shield but then it is no fun. I prefer to play without cloak of mirroring and shield of balduran. The beholder lair is still tough for me... for me it is the toughest in the game.
The most enjoyable fights were the ones against other groups like mencar, slave compound, hatchetman etc... they should have had more fights like that.

Seems like I had a nasty encounter with a Lich early in the game, the one that drops Daystar? Firkraag can definately give you the reload blues, but those @#$%ing Mind Flayers and their @#$% psionics can be absolutely dreadful.

The hardest battle for me was that group in the Sewers underneath the Temple District. It took me 10 reloads to beat them.

I am sure you did user
However I haven't yet had BMU or any high level abilities upon reaching the beholder lair in the underdark
Have to try that area deathblow soon though. Thinking about a solo fighter/thief perhaps. Arrows of detonation, can they only be found in the above mentioned place?

Until I broke down and bought a protection from magic scroll...... Kangaxx the Demi-Lich. I found him far more difficult than dragons, Shangalar, the gaurded compound or anything else.
Of course, once you start playing the mods....that changes everything.

For me at least, Kangaxx isn't that hard. Even though he's immune to so many things, there are so many strategies that he's easily beatable with just about every party, that's IF you know those strategies!
What I did with the Samia Fight, was I closed the door before I picked up the treasure, so I was already ready. The PebbleCrusher was so tough for me, that I had to wait until I did some major quests until I finally beat it.
Probably the hardest fight for me was Firkraag along with his mage (That's if you don't use cheap tricks like Traps, Cloudkill/Incediary Cannon Trick, Fake Talk, etc.), and the Guarded Compound.

For Samia and company I cast lots of Skull Traps and Glyphs of Warding in the room in which they appear out of thin air. It's funny how Glyphs explodes first and then a few seconds later Skull Traps finish them off. Observe them drinking healing potions like crazy with Farsight.
For Firkragg, I buffed up my fighter/mage with protection spells so the dragon couldn't touch him, and had my spellcasters knock his HP down with Lightning Bolts and Holy Smites from behind. It wasn't really that hard.
Another way - I cast Simarculum via Vhailor's Helm, then force-attack Firkragg with my summons. Have the Simarculum cast Tensor's Transformation and then Time Stop (I used a scroll bought from Ribald.) Then let the Simarculum chop Firkragg into pieces.
For Kangaxx, the first lich form is quite easy - just dispel Mislead and whack him. As for his second form, cast Simarculum to get two Rings of Ram and knock his HP down. Then use lots of Melf's Minute Meteors.
Pebblecrusher and company - I "do" them as soon as I get out of the dungeon. I think the best way is to cast lots of Skull Traps (like 15) in front of the Berserking guy, then cast fireball right in the middle of the room, turning them hostile. They all rush up to you and get killed by Skull Traps.
Twisted Rune is easy if you have Protection from Undead scroll, which is a very cheap method. Let the lich teleport, then use Spell Turning to kill the Beholder. Vampire ignores you, so kill the barehanded fighter (or whatever he is.) Next Cloudkill the mage - when she comes to get you, cast fireball to disrupt it every time. Now you got the Staff of Magi, you can get out of there or attack the lich.
The most difficult battles excluding the bandits in the Temple Sewers, I think, are those against Drows. They have magic resistance and good saving throws so it's hard to cast anything on them except Sunfire which damages your party too.
Cloudkilling and fake-talking - they're just no fun. You bought the game to have fun, and should not use "cheese." Well I guess Skull Traps are bit "cheesy" too, but at least your enemies aren't bottled inside.
