Friends: I found it really useful for shopping especially if you sacrificed charisma to pump some other stats you might need. Plus that it is easily affordable.

Melf's Minute Meteors are simply astounding. The only ranged weapon you'll ever need. They'll kill just about everything.

Friends is OK since it gives you a discount in shops (though I had trouble verifying this) and there are not many other worthwhile level 1 picks.
