I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I didn't care much for the Lord of the Rings books. I found them hard to read and Tolkien's narrative style boring and bogged down in minutia.

) It was a very difficult book to read (especially for me. I read it when I was 10!

) But, unless you get into the books big time, your not going to enjoy it. The true lure of LotR, though, is the use of descriptive paragraphs. Tolkien did an amazing job in that department..
As for Salvatore, I do like him as a writing, but I still see all the things that others see. Yes, he is cliched, to an extent. But, like Tolkien, he's more of a descriptive writer. I personally find his fight scenes are some of the best written scenes out there. (Also, a writer can't catch all his goofs, thats what an editor is for

)
