Yes 2 of the them can be saved, while the other is already dead. I guess there is nothing else you can do with the dwarf other that kill him if you want to get the axe.

Since the dwarf was evil and apparently murdered Dealan's kin with that notorious axe, I think killing him was a right thing to do after all. I am not sure there is alternative even if your char is evil as well. The dwarf is crazy and attack on sight.

If you don't pick the axe up during the actual gauntlet run, you won't be able to enter the dungeons again. I found that out the hard way, as I'm just now searching the web for any kind of console command to get the item .
