I'm male, but I started a new game with a female protagonist. I intend to play out the Anomen romance to the end. From what I've read on these forums he actually becomes a bit nicer when you romance him. Now, that I've got to see for myself!

I have to agree. Though I tend to play both sexes about equally. Usually I start the game in MP mode and make a main char and a side kick of the opposite sex then transfer it over to single player mode. The female avatars are nicer, I don't like romancing elves and seldom do the romances, and I'd just love to be able to download the Italian voice set but still have English subtitles. Is that possible?

Just to keep on topic:
I've played male and female characters in MMORPGs and standalone games. Typically, the really big differences come in those online ones where sex supposedly makes no difference. Female characters, I've discovered, tend to be told what to do more, as though there were idiots (which is unfortunately the way quite a few males regard women in reallife), and also get quite a bit more help in the form of free goods and cash.

Maybe it's because I'm a man myself but I have been considering playing it as a female as a Paladin or as a Priestess of Helm. I voted Male BTW.

Male vs Female treatment
I've never noticed any difference in the way a female main char was treated. Romances aside, I can't recall getting better treatment or help from anyone when playing a female protagonist. Does anyone have specific examples they could post?
@Fable: BTW, that was a good idea. Having Gina 'step' down from a billboard. As a lark I downloaded a B&W pic of her and stepped it down to make the L & S bitmap portraits for use in the game. Came out pretty good. I could send them to you if you like.

I can't take credit for that one. Federico Fellini used it in an isolated episode he did for a joint film made in Italy in the 1960s. Can't recall the name of it, offhand; the rest wasn't particularly good.

That one idiot in the copper coronet - IIRC, female chars get a differen't treatment. Same goes for that lady in the den of seven veils... er, vales

The drow city.... you definitely get a better treat ment if you are a male....

I've never actually played female, but I would have thought it to be the reverse (since drow society is so female-oriented)

In general, there's so much equality between the sexes in the Baldur's Gate series, it doesn't make much difference which one you play. I've played both. The differences mainly consist of pronoun references ("he" and "she") and titles ("Lord" and
"Lady"), romance restrictions based on sex (unless you make modifications), a few NPC dialogues (for example, if you play a female, Aerie will say she's glad that the group is led by a woman since men steal all the blankets), and a few specific situations such as the treatment you receive in Ust'Natha, although aside from Phaere's demand for sex from a lowly male, the difference is not significant. (I guess some people think that being ordered to have sex with Phaere constitutes "better treatment". To each his own.)
I think it just depends on personal preferences and which sex you think you can identify with. I prefer female portraits and soundsets from an aesthetic standpoint (I just haven't been able to find many male portraits and soundsets that I really like that are suitable for a 21-year-old hero), so I usually choose a female character. The romances aren't that important to me after all this time. Bonding with other party members is great, but most of the romances require too much babysitting for my liking, and I feel like my character has more important things to worry about.

I generally play male due to it being less confusing.
However I really enjoyed playing a female elf who romanced Xan in both BG1 and BG2. Most enjoyable romance.
I must admit that I agree with those who say that the females are better on the eye, but perhaps that is because I am male. :laugh:
