EXACTLY. When you need to dispose of someone legally, there are several ways to do it, and that is one. Then they on the hook for attacking you and there is no penalty.
*sigh* Unfortunately, my crime did not go unnoticed. The Thieves Guild somehow knew that I had killed the rich guy and wouldn't pay me for the key. Oh well. Didn't they know that it wasn't my fault? He attacked me first! Well, after I failed to pickpocket him.....

Did you pick up on the fact that the key could also be gotten off of the rich guys henchman in the Balmora Council Club? Its the hangout for the Commona Tong. Did you talk to the head Imperial Legion guy in Fort Moonmoth? He has a special job for you to do that entails rooting out corruption by getting rid of five Commona Tong in Balmora. Anyway its easy enough to talk to people (before they're dead) and find out which henchman has the key. He is surley but if you get your speechcraft and personality scores high enough and admire him he will give you the key. Or you can find out by talking to any thieves guild member that this group that includes the key carrying henchman is the same ones the Imperial Legion guy wants you to kill. In that case you can kill them all and take the key (you get scolded by the Thief Guild lizard guy but he gives you the reward).

I was having a heck of a time killing the five Cammona Tong members, and I knew I would find the key if I could. I didn't know I could sweet-talk the Savant.

So, I opted for going after the rich guy....
Almost immediately after I hit upon a workable strategy for getting the Cammona Tong...
Oh, well. Live and learn, I guess.
BTW, I see that the search function is once again active for the Gamebanshee (yay Buck!), so I should be able to answer my own stupid questions..... but I might still post the occasional anecdote from the game just for the fun of it!

Okay, the search function didn't help me here. I was wandering around north of Balmora and I found a dead person under a stone arch. His name was Tsiya and he had a skooma pipe. So far, no one has asked about this person. Is there a quest associated with him?

Thanks, T!
Oh, BTW, I started exploring to the east of Balmora, heading toward Molag Mar. Yes, the Cliff Racers are starting to get on my nerves! I am considering your method of disposal....

What is the method?

Usually a long distance high power fire spell. I occasionally go into cheating mode (god mode) with a character I don't use any more, just for the pleasure of flaming the vermin out of the sky. It's fun to get a whole flock at once.

I prefer snow balling them to death, myself.

There's nothing more satisfying than dropping those pesky things out of the sky with your bow, after getting their attention with a Soul Trap spell, of course.

LOL! I tried to Soul Trap one of those fire guys. I must have failed the spell about 40 times! (he was stuck behind a tree and couldn't hurt me, so I just kept trying the spell....) I guess I need to train up my Mysticism skill....

Do Cliff Racers give you any kind of good gem level or are they just throw-away items?

Am I the only one who found the cliff racer's tummy side look too gross? The veins on the throats in particular.... They are too realistic! Each time those nasties fall from the sky on to my head, I shut my eyes and shake my head to avoid them.

Yuck!

As a trapped soul the Cliff Racer comes up short. They are weapons practice fodder and not worth a petty soul gem. The best thing you can trap in a petty soul is a Shalk (sells for 300 gps). Rats, Nix hounds and Racers are worth only 100 gps. If the Racer you were trying to trap was behind a tree its possible that the soul trap spell was hitting the tree instead of the Racer. If you can see your spell travel out toward the target it should be successful if it hits the victim.

I can't remember, but check the construction set; I'm sure they are both the same.
edited post - I stand corrected: Vivec's soul is 1000, Almalexia's is 1500. By comparison, a golden saint and ascended sleeper have souls of 400.
FYI - the enchantment value of a soul only affects the charge for that enchantment, not the amount of the enchantment that can be 'stuffed' into the item.
