Personally I find Khalid very usefull. For the end-games in BG he proves very usefull, due to being a pure fighter.
I hate all thoese multi- and dual-classing in BG1. Pure classes are the way to go

(Also hated that they dualed Imoen to mage in bg2 - I wanna keep her as a thief. )

Kivan was also my favorite archer, although I usually changed him out with Coran. But the reason Kivan is "better" is because you get him earlier

Jaheria I didn't like much in BG1, especially due to the multi-class thingy, so she "usually" died horrible when charging some group of monster solo but had forgotten her armour

I never liked Garrick or any bards. IIRC, necromancers can't learn divination spells in BG1, so I never used Xzar for very long (though Montaron is an extremely good character). That shifts me to my next point: Alora. She's kind of redundant. You've got Imoen, who's there at the beginning and makes a damn good thief in her own right, and if you don't have Imoen you've probably got Montaron or Coran, who are much more versatile than Alora because they're multiclassed fighter/thiefs. Plus by the time you find Alora you're pretty far along in the game. The only reason I ever use Alora is because she's kinda funny, and sings Nirvana lyrics.

I agree 100%. There are loads mage-type characters in BG2, but only 2 NPC's who can really be 'thieves', 1 of which gets... well, you know.

Khalid is probably one of the worst characters. It takes a while until you get the gloves, he's attached to Jaheira (frustrating to arrange an accident) and he as those god damn low breaking points. Better part of valor indeed

Well the most useless is Jaheira, Edwin (well he's evil and he leaves when u gewt a good rep) Sharteel, Minsc (Hes so f*king stupid and gets lost easy, Kivan because of his constution. All the bards in BG suck as well and Faldorn is the WORST u can find in the whole game. Might as well have no one is u have her

IHMO Jaheira sucks indeed but Edwin is the best mage in the game cause his 1+ extra spell each spell level and he has the best mage class. IMO Sharteel and Minsc are the best CC fighters, and Kivan is the best archer, I like him even more than Coran and he has always most of the kills in my party. Garrick is useful in the begging if you want Algernons cloak and/or you dont have high lore yet or enough identify spells/money.

I dunt mean Khalid i a good ffighter strength wise but he has the HIGHEST hp in the game. at 1 point without any books or nething (at lvl7 he had 90 HP)
hes good 4 distracting the enemy cuz he can take alot of hitting
well edwin does suck cuz well CMON its not good 2 have him . HE PISSES ME OFF so much and everytime he says something annoying i just kill him (that when im desperate 4 a mage i pick him up)

Actually, Necrotaur, Necromancers can't learn illusion spells, such as invisibility (which is probably a lifesaver in this game, to some people). Conjurers (Edwin, for example) are the ones who can't learn divination spells. Hope you don't mind that I said that. It just dawned on me.

Edwin is best because:
-Best INT
-Extra Spell
-Conjurer (Even if I had divination spells, I wouldnt waste slots with identify)..

He's not annoying at all compared to Qualy or Xan And you can have him in same party with Minsc if you arrange Dynaheir into an accident and pick re-pick him after her death.

And about Khalid, he isn't any special close combat fighter and there are better archers than he is. You dont need his high hp if you have good archers and people with spells that stop enemies (hold, web..).

most useless to me were the 2 bards.... i mean if either one had a dex of 17-18 they'd be usefull as archers atleast... but they dont... and they're hopeless as fighters and get less than half the spells of a wizard... a third of edwins spells.... the only possible benefit i could see was the high lore

and khalid and jaheria are pretty uselesstoo... decent for tanking, but both have poor strenght, and by the time u can get the str gloves u done most the game...

the most USEFULL to me are kogain (best tank in either game with the dex bracers, full plate and a +1 large shield) and shartell (arm her with spider bane, its got huge reach so she can fight literally behind kogain and wont get hit) as fighters... viconia as priest (even more awesome in bg2!) and edwin is EASILY the best wizard... with the ring of wizardy he gets 12 1st level spells!!

Least liked (becuase they're useless) would have to be Jahiera, Faldorn, Quayle, Yeslick, Alora, and Tiax... with the exception of Montaron and Coran for their superb stats suitable for both, all of the multi-class NPCs are crap, not to mention annoying and ugly

The NPCs I can tolerate, and can be quite useful are Garrick, Shar Teel, Kagain, Branwen, Montaron/Xzar, and Ajantis... none of these characters really stan out but fun to take along once in a while.

The NPC all stars have to be...

Fighters:
Kivan - well balanced in both ranged and melee.
Minsc - Always good for a laugh, and is in fact the strongest NPC I believe + berserk.
Coran - Bracers of archery and longbow of marksmenship for this guy, steady flow of damage to aid your tanks in bringing down the big boys, excellent in melee as well.

Clerics:
Viconia - unless you are a cleric, she has to be the best (perfect for wearing the ankheg plate).

Thieves:
Safana - strong and agile, and with her in your party, it's a good idea to dual-class Imoen without worrying about losing the best theif.
Imoen - without saying.
Skie - late game substitute for Imoen.
Eldoth - need him if you want Skie, and why waste skill points for pickpocket with the others. (and I know he's a bard, the more magic missiles the better.)

Mages:
Xan - better for support spells than the cleric NPCs, moon blade.
Edwin - Cleary top-notch, 12 magic missiles as mentioned earlier with RoWI.
Dynahier - Just as good as Edwin, even better actualy if you want to have a Reputation of 20.
