Assassin (with amazing stats - has been with me through BG as well - celestial fury and any short bow - Gesen at the moment)
Korgan (Axe +3 and Dwarwen thrower - prof 5 in both axe and warhammer)
Viconia (100% magic resistant with human flesh - well, she's evil - right? - and turning undead like a madman)
Edwin (spells, spells, spells)
Haer'Dalis (just for lore and fun - + he comes in handy if you want to steal)
My first time being evil - and it's a lot of fun for a used to be do gooder!

Anomen - always holds my cleric position. Since he's a level 7 fighter, his THAC0 is better than Viconia's. If you give him a ring of dexterity, his stats are excellent.
Jaheira - the healer of my party, so that Anomen can memorize other spells. The Harper's call spell is useful, too. As well, she's a decent 2nd line fighter (Quarterstaff). She needs strength-increasing equipment, though. As I hate Viconia (really no match for Anomen) and Aerie (low constitution - 9!!! -, as a dual class, she won't be able to gain enough mage levels), I need Jaheira for romancing, anyways.
Keldorn - if I don't play a paladin myself. Carsomyr + 5 (+6 TOB) rocks. His dispel magic abilitiy can make a huge difference battling mages.
If I'm playing a paladin, Korgan - replacing him with Sarevok later on.
Imoen - the only acceptable thief and a very good mage. A level 7 thief sufficies for BG to disarm traps, open doors and chests. The only possible choice: Yoshimo = dead man walking; Nalia's impotent thief; Jan is adecent thief, but can't cope with Imoen as a mage.
The sixth position - Edwin (if you prefer mages)or Minsc (if you prefer tanks).

My latest party.
Halfling swashbuckler- from BG1 with 20 dex. He's my sniper, and with shadow armor, and boots of stealth +20 ex he's got amzing stats at a low level. he'll get the short sword of backtabbing later kudane, and will switch between tugian bow and gesen bow.
Korgan- the tank. I'm going to put his *'s into sword and shield style and war hammer, so he can wield, either crom fayer, frostvearver, the throwing dwarf hammer, and the fireaxe.
Keldorn- although i may have a problem between him and korgan, things are fine right now. he gets 2 handed sword, heavy crossbow(i don't need a light one because my theif's the sniper), and 2 handed weapon style.
Anomen- the 3rd fighter type and the healer + undead fighter. with his superior thaco, because he was a fighter, he's really good with the mace of disruption. Plus he's the healer, and after passing the test he'll get plenty of spells.
Nalia- my first mage. she'll deal with all the lesser used spells, which i only need occasionly.
Edwin- he'll get the major spells. acid arrow, fireball, cloudkill, etc.
The only thing i worry about is the realtionship between the lawful good guys(keldorn and anomen) and their evil party member(korgan and edwin).
my theif in TN so he can take people with both alignments.

I have to say that my fighter based party is working like a treat. I just mow through everything. They all have good saves aswell so no problem there either. I'd say that your bg2 party is only as good as its weakest member.
I found that a fighter/theif can wear full plate mail +1 and still open locks and remove traps and pickpocket. Since I don't use hide with that character this was very useful.

To the guy with the all-fighter party:
Have you fought any dragons yet? Or any liches? I'm just curious, because I thought of doing the same thing, only I was worried there would be some opponents who would be difficult to beat. BTW, who do you get rid of in ToB to get ToB guy? I would say Minsc.

Seems to me that a sound beating is the easiest way to beat every enemy in the game.
The game offers you protective equipment of such effectiveness, that spellcasters hardly pose a threat after a while. Armed with the Shield of Harmony, Ring of Free Action, Cloak of Mirroring and (occasionally) either the Ring of Spell Turning or the Book of Infinite Spells (for Spell Turning), and finally some Paladin's Resist Fear, no spell in the game can touch you.

Dragons have never been easier. Liches always die to mace of disruption or sunray.
I played the second half of the game with all characters on standard attack. When I fought the black dragon I measured the time it took for me to kill it: 10 seconds. Pretty good, and I hardly had any injuries to my party. Like Xyx said there is planty of good equipment to go around.
If you like hack and slash I recommend it. You should have an Inquisitor in you team though.

Just entered Spellhold with myself (well-sorted PALADIN), MINSC, JAHEIRA (who's starting to bug me) and NALIA. Had no problems up to now, until I picked up Imoen and somehow lost Nalia (see another thread).
Problem is that Minsc is getting a bit redundant now - Sir DVZ is more than capable of mashing most nasties in a hand-2-hand, while Minsc just sits at the back with the girls and twangs a few arrows. Don't wanna get rid of him 'cos anybody with a painted head is hard to kick out.

IMO, there is no perfect party, just the party that's best suited for you. In my case, I like parties with a bit of theme, if possible,
always at the most, 4 characters only. My current party is:
Dunkan - my dwarf barbarian, started out with 105 hps (heheh) and would kick Korgan's ass anyday + he can also use Azuredge (though it's not killing any undead...funnily enough)
Valygar - see my thread about Valygar, I guess dual-wielding CF with something else he'll be a real potent backstabbing scout.
Viconia - though my dwarf hasn't had a romance with her yet (don't think he will, though, with all that beard), her magic resistance can get to 100% which just rocks. nice wis 18.
Imoen - she could not live without me at her side, besides she is next best thief and mage (Yoshimo/Edwin are not to be trusted and who finds Jan's stories funny?
)
Theme of the party: They're all a bunch of outcasts. Me, because of Bhaal's blood and barbarianism, Viconia due to her skin, Valygar because he's a fugitive and Imoen because she's stuck with me (I don't know much about her yet).
The opposite to this theme would be the goody-two-shoes city noble background types: Keldorn, Anomen, Nalia and a lawful good PC.
CREEPY!

My very first party on the game was:
PC: Sorceress
Minsc
Aerie
Anomen
Nalia
Keldorn
Well, the sorceress proved very weak, even Aerie seemed like a fire giant in comparison, but that's life I suppose.
My current party:
PC:Undead Hunter
Aerie
Anomen
Nalia
Tashia
Keldorn
I know I would have to get rid of someone in the process in order to get Sola, but who this will be I haven't the faintest idea...
Cheers

I can't quite remember, but here's what I think my last party was (Good aligned)
Berserker
Keldorn - Too noble to pass up (Needed Gauntlets of Dexterity....was that item even in the game? Jeez, my memory's going)
Minsc - All the way from Nashkel (Or was it Valygar?)
Anomen - Loved his story....best fighting cleric
Nalia - Main mage
Imoen - 'Other Mage', plus she's been a constant from BG1

The best run through I had was with:
Ranger dual wield scimitars ala drizzt
Minsc
Nalia
Mazzy
Jahiera
Viconia
I like to go with a lot of women, gives it a nice atmosphere, i mean would u rather go to sleep next to korgan or viconia? Plus they were really good, /w me, minsc and mazzy as tanks, jahiera /w insect plague and call lightning, viconia /w her cleric stuff and back-up tank and nalia throwing spells.
I did most of the quests /w little dificulty and I romanced all of the girls, tho non to completion. I originally wanted to only rmoance jaheira, but who can say no to viconia
?

I created three characters of my own in a multiplayer game: a Blade, a Skald, and a Jester. Since I wanted to follow the existing storyline, I let Imoen stay with my troubadours. She's been doing a pretty good job on tambourine. We helped Minsc and Jaheira get out of the Irenicus's dungeon, since they had tried to help us. But before I dismissed Minsc, we took him to see the play in the basement of the Five Flagons Inn since he and Boo enjoyed it so much. We let Jaheira go off and do her Harper thing. We just couldn't get into that, despite the name.
We were really bummed out when Imoen was kidnapped. We didn't know what else to do, so we went looking for a new gig. We tried the Circus, but it was under siege, so we rescued everybody and met Aerie. She wants to be an actress, so we let her into our group. Her vocals have improved enormously. Her uncle is good friends with Raelis Shea, and they asked us to rescue one of her actors. So we went and saved Haer'Dalis. Then we got mixed up with some bounty hunters and a warden in some kind of astral prison. We busted out of there and sent the Sigil Troupe on their way, but Haer'Dalis wanted to stay with us, so we let him into our group. He and Aerie really hit it off.
We got the deed to the playhouse, so we decided to give it a try. We were worried about attracting an audience, however, because the streets of Athkatla were so unsafe. The law was useless, and the Cowled Wizards had really ticked us off, so we decided to get out there and bust some heads. We worked for Bodhi because she promised to help us find Imoen, and we destroyed the Shadow Thief guild. We knew that we weren't through with her yet, but we decided to wait and see what happened. Sure enough, she led us to Imoen and then betrayed us. She ended up paying for it but good. But first we had to rescue Imoen.
It sure took a long time to get back to Athkatla, but we didn't let anyone hassle us. Anyone who tried to interfere with our self-expression went down big-time. No one can stop us from making art and bringing our story to the Realms, not even Jon Irenicus. Someday we'll find our destiny and have a showdown at the Throne of Bhaal, but for now, it's time to jam.
