Yes it is but these are the stats that determine how your action outcome for the rest of the game. Maybe it is more moronic to take a fighter into battle with low strength and dexterity and watch him take swing after swing with his sword and not hitting anything now translate that into hundreds of battles and that hour doesnt seem missplaced well this is all an exageration but you get it. Anyway I use Gate Keeper to generate a character now it saves time.

Uh, Kiel's Helmet works with a certain cursed morningstar that causes berserk status, in my experience at least.

The highest stats I've ever rolled in BGI to start were definitely with both the Bard and the Paladin.

Paladin I have actually rolled 100 (that's right five 18's [18/85 or something for strength which was kind of BOO!, but hey c'mon] and a 10)

The Bard is the class I've found to get the second highest rolls, 92 (four 18's and two 10's), once achieving this score I thought I may be able to roll higher, strangely enough after rolloing a 92 the first time I found myself getting it more and more often but never higher.
