u can use this strategy (summons at choke point + ranged attacks with highly enchanted weapons) on almost any hard-to-kill monster, the guardian too. but this way you'll miss out (spoiler below)
chars who stand close to the dragon when he dies are healed, rested, get permanent +10 or so HP, and +5 or 10 (don't remember) acid resistance.
