My party is the best. I always restart because im not happy with my party but mine is great.
From highest to lowest.
Kivan (Got him on the 2nd day) 503 kills
Coran (323)
P.C (291)
Imoen (177) I used her with Backstab
Kagain (143)
Yeslick (77)
My "weakest link" is Kagain.
My most best party member in general is my Fighter/Cleric
My so-so party member is Coran because he backstabs.

I've finished the game several times but I have never backstabbed anyone, not even one kill. Is it really good, or just very lame tactic ?

One of my most favorite tactics... except against certain mages (annoying mirror image). On a good hit I've seen characters do over 100 damage.

I'll post my party here:
My PC (Neutral Good Fighter)
Minsc and Boo (Tank and Backup Archer)
Kivan (Sniper)
Yeslick (need a Cleric and I like to go with all Good NPCs)
Imoen (feel strangely connected to her somehow
)
And Minsc's witch (can never remember her name; I need a mage anyways)
Evil:
Me
Kagain
Shar-Teel
Viconia
Edwin
Safana

In general I don't bother with backstabbing unless I have a Fighter/Thief. Plain Thieves just don't have a good enough THAC0 to justify putting them in such a vulnerable position. It is usually easier to snipe from a distance and run away, especially in BG1 where missile weapons are relatively more effective than in BG2.

Fighter
Khalid
Jaheria
Minsc
Dynaheir
Coran
Works like a charm, there is no situation this party isn't ready for. Also Kivan is awesome but I use Coran for bows because he is also a theif, which allows me to dump Imoen, who I find very annoying in BG1.

I once had a party with:
Myself - gnomish illusionist
Minsc - Wielding Varscona
Kivan - Using a bow and bracers of Archery
Imoen- Trained to backstab forget those damn traps!
Xan - Our always friendly Elf
Dynaheir - You vixen you.
Yep, 3 mages, and I loved it, Stilgar tried to convince me that I should switch Xan, but I just liked the sight of all those magic missiles flying at a creature so much I never thought about it.
The only real problem is healing, I had no cleric so temple where a sight for sore eyes. And frequently have I entered an area, killed everything, rested, healed with the special ability, rested, healed with special ability, and so on.
I think the game ran 200 days in game time. But it was different from usual power gaming.
