I'm sorry, but the few paladins I've encountered in faerun make my teeth itch! O got rid of keldorn after I used him for a while, no loss, and those knights of the radient heart are all weenies... good time for old pit fiend action, right?
naahhh. will get their help for bodhi in chapter 6, and since my party remains behind the skellys for that, the knights will be decimated by the vampires whiel I remain nice and safe...
They call me Darth...

The image of a bunch of paladins fighting a bunch of vampires in some crypt, while user, korgan and Jan stand watching from behind a phalanx of skeleton warriors ---- these are strange times, people, strange times.

User, I wanted to mention that you can't backstab with Holy Avenger, or any other two handed sword or bastard sword. I think a nice combination of say blackblood or blade of roses in one slot, Holy Avenger in the other, backstab with the one-handed weapon or a staff (but not the staff of the magi), then switch over to Holy Avenger real quick for the MR. :)

BTW I uninstalled BGII and TOB, reinstalled both, loaded up my save game (where I was having trouble with Adalon), and it worked! So I'm BACK IN BUSINESS, BABY!!!!!
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

whew!! relieved it all turned ok for ya...

so if you have prof in a wep you can backstab with it, right?

SO what happens if you sk in a prof for jan in two handed sword?????

The biggest backstab of all, with holy avenger!!!!

This should work since you can backstab with staff of ram, right?

Say, if you have wittle jan with a powerful crossbow, and cast mislead and shoot something with it, will his cross bow prof allow him to backstab with it???

does backstab work with ranged weps???

oops, almost forgot, finally got use any item, have to pick up scarlet ninja to...

oh, yeah, almost forgot, jake, buddy, are you the one with mind flayer tctics thread? got a new one for ya, will post right away...

any way, about to hit brynlaw, after killing off aran linvale, too bad, he is such a nice guy, and I certainly have no problems working for the shadow thieves, but 3 words...

rift home axe!!!!!

best wepon for korgy except possibly dwarven thrower...actually has better stats, in fact.

but does slashing damage, more often resisted, I think...

anyway, am finally picking up korgy, waited until every quest in chapter 2 was done, he should be very strong and thirsty about now...

going to get him liquored up and have him join party
They call me Darth...

the way I understand it is you can only backstab with hand-to-hand weapons that are normally usable by a thief: dagger, short sword, long sword, katana, club, and staff (don't know about scimitars). Yes, the staff is a thief usable weapon. This is why you can backstab with the staff of the ram (or, as I just tested and verified, the staff of fire) However, the staff of the magi is listed as "not usable" by a thief, since it is only usable by mages, so you can't backstab with it.

Carsomyr (and other two handed swords) are not on the list of thief weapons, so although a fighter/thief can be proficient with them, he/she still can't backstab with them - you get a message "weapon not suitable for backstab" I suppose that if you edited the item and added "thief" to the "usable by" area, maybe it would backstab - worth a try, but I don't know how to edit items.

As far as the ranged weapons go, you cannot backstab with them, if you get into proper position (behind the enemy) and shoot them, you just get a regular damage. I also checked - "throwing daggers" like the boomerang dagger and the fire tooth dagger can backstab when used as melee weapons, but will not when used ranged. Oh well, too bad :)

Despite these limitations, backstab is a very viable and useful ability - 5x backstab can be devastating if your character has a decent weapon and STR, and it basically gives you one free kill at the beginning of most fights, which is very nice, and also quite emotionally satisfying. Have your thief hide in shadows and wear the cloak of nondetection so that true sights will not find you.
