But then again, us Coen Bros. fans- we have a different take on things than most people. All I can say is- Sucks for them!!!
Now, that's true. A rom com for Coen Brothers fans is probably not going to be what your general rom com fans might expect. It wasn't that people didn't laugh, it was just that there were so many little details to laugh at all the way through, whereas everyone else just had a big laugh at something obvious every so often.
I don't think it's brilliant and I don't think Von Trier is a genious, but it's a very good movie.
Compared to what I was hoping and expecting- the ending was even tame. And once you got into the car with a certain character- I found it obvious what was going to happen.
The very minimal set design was great. I have to credit Von-Trier (Who from his interviews and appearances strikes me as an pretentious artsy filmmaker) for being brave enough to have absolutely no destractions to the story.
I have to see it again, but my initial impression is that the point is dreadfully simple, but that the way he gets there, hinting at some really great ideas fascinated me. I'd get his other movies, if I could find them.
Actualy, Dancer in the Dark should be easy enough to find- Anyone know how it is?

It is one of the few movies I have ever walked out of. I thought it was rubbish, but to you that is probably a recommendation.
I saw one a while ago called Open Hearts, not sure if it's a Lars Von Trier, but it is one of those Dogme directors, and it was incredibly good from a character point of view.
I'd have thought you could find Breaking the Waves, it was fairly well-known.

It's by Susanne Bier, starring my favorite Scandinavian actress Paprika Steen. I haven't seen it yet, I am going to as soon as I have time.

I saw The Sentinel a little while back, with Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Kim Basinger and Eva Longoria. Douglas is a well-known and well-liked secret service agent who's set up so that it appears he is in on a plot to murder the President while Sutherland is the man who's tracking him down. Longoria playes Sutherland's 'prodigy' while Basinger is the President's wife. Douglas sets out to clear his name while finding the real mole and assasins in the progress.
There's not much to say about the movie since it's fairly average in all categories. All the characters are stereotypical or relatively unnoticable. The story is the same way; it's not spectacular, it's what you'd expect from this sort of movie. It doesn't have the same twists and turns of movies (like Seven) in the same genre and thus, has a fairly ho-hum ending.
That said, nothing's really bad about the movie either. It's just average.
I also saw The Way of the Gun today, with Benicio Del Toro, Ryan Phillipe, and James Caan, about a pair of criminals who kidnapp the surogate mother of a renowned money launderer. The interrelation of all the characters (except Del Toro and Phillipe) really pulls the movie together and keeps you guessing right up until the very end. It's what you'd call a cerebral action movie.
The action sequences are standard fare, with the exception of a creative car chase scene; all the actors give great performances, especially Del Toro, who just oozes of 'cool'. A lot of the scenes were creatively done and sometimes the best parts of the movie are when there's no dialogue at all.
It's quite a good movie, especially if you're into 'smarter' action films.
