When I read about this a few days ago, it saddened me.

I'd rather see a poor attempt, then nothing.
Damn the BoS game (which is why they cancelled the production)!
I disagree. A poor attempt at making a Fallout game could ruin the reputation the series have. I'd rather remember back on my days of playing Fallout-series with good memories, then see them all tattered up by a sub-par game bearing the Fallout title. Fallout:Tactics almost did that to me, but I kinda like the concept of FO:T

Demise
About the demise, I was wondering whart anybody thinks of Baldur's Gate 3, was it going to be for a P.C, or consul?

Baldur's Gate 3? Throne of Bhaal was the last of the PC Baldur's Gate games, which has been stated many times by the staff that developed the game.
If you're refering to Dark Alliance, chances are it would've have been on the console.

Just spotted the link to this on the homepage for GB. Apparently Interplay has told IGN otherwise about Black Isle.
December 18, 2003 - For those of you who haven't been following the story, there have been some rumors circulating the industry that Black Isle Studios, creators of Icewind Dale, has been closed down. After posting the initial story on the rumor, we received more details from a former employee who confirmed that the studio was closed and that Fallout 3 had been cancelled.
Which brings us up to our new guest star, Interplay's investor relations department, with their official denial of the stories. "For the record," says Interplay, "Black Isle Studios remains open with projects pending, the status of Fallout 3 is under review, and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel will ship on January 13."
As far as this "under review" status for Fallout 3, Interplay had this to say: "Fallout lives...now that is not to say we have a new Fallout PC game coming in the next few months, but management will do what it can to maximize the intellectual property it owns and the fan base it has, within the financial parameters it must operate."
Interplay was quick to characterize the closure and cancellation reports as nothing more than "false rumors" possibly generated by former Interplay employees. (The source of our second story was, indeed, a former Interplay employee.) Since Interplay is a publicly-traded company (IPLY) it does seem likely that they would have issued an official release regarding the closure. As our contact at Interplay put it: "If Interplay management had closed its most valuable development asset or chosen to abandon one of its most prized intellectual assets, the Company would have made an announcement."

Fascinating. I suspect that if we pealed back that second layer of truth, we'd find yet a third, which adjusts the facts in the first two. But what do I know? I just like Hegelian synthesis.

Ineptplay is keeping BIS "alive" by still having two employees from the division working on BG:DA and FO:BOS. This is so that they can, in their own words, put the BIS brand on every title they see "worthy" of the recognition.

Now, that just might be my third layer of truth.

I would suggest oppening the Gray Isle... hehehe... a garthering of developers running a whole new rts business. With enough freedom to do not rely on Interplay, or just use another 'gaming factory' as a link to the customer.
I'm sure Baldur's Gate series can not be post -extended, but that will just be cool if they pre-extended it, like building a prequel bout the harpers efforts to save the child or something.
Hope someone keep building the BG style games, cause Faerun has not been explored enough.
And bout fallout 3, I just think they've drained it with Tactics, but a new engine will be welcome, as well as a new Chosen one history. But results could really be messy with another development team.

But that's just the thing about "BG style games." They're not limited by subject matter. It doesn't matter whether you place an RPG in Baldur's Gate, the Arabia of a Thousand Night and a Night, or a pre-Ragnarok Scandanavia: what *does* matter is the writing, the interface, the quest structure, party interrelationships, etc. So in fact anybody given sufficient resources could do up a BG-style game, avoiding license fees. It doesn't depend upon location. It depends upon game design.

Interplay hasn't announced BIS's closure since it isn't really closed... They just fired every single employee except two.
