@CE: Real men just...deal with adveristy without using blowdryers. ;)

@Dottie: Oooo, now real men do indeed use chainsaws. Mine is oiled, full of fuel and ready to go.

@Xandax: Yup. Real men don't have to spend alot of time in front of the mirror, because they hop out of bed in the morning looking good and they know it. ;)

One does not obtain rugged good looks by using Oil of Olay. One obtains rugged good looks by...well, by being rugged. :D

Hey, look. In the US Army, males are not authorized to use an umbrella while in uniform. Females are though. Hehehe, soooo...

Real men don't use umbrellas either. Grrrr! :p

I've never onced used an umbrella - and least of all when I was in the army :D
Oh sarge, I can't dig this fox hole, cause my umbrella would get dirty......

It is only water for crying out loud

I shave my head to save time plus girls seem to like it.

Country Yokel - Well La-Di-Da Mr. 5th Avenue manicure
Homer J. Simpson - Well excuse me, I just happen to believe in good grooming.

@Xandax: Indeed. The only times yours truly has ever used an umbrella was when yours truly was outdoors in the rain with a lady. I held the umbrella for her. :)

A little water only enhances manliness. Real men know this. :D

@Idioteque: Hair: Wash and wear, because it's manly. :D

It's a point for 0 correlation between "real manliness" and use of hairdryers! :D

@Chanak: Real men shave off their hair when it gets wet? Real men put on a gigantic woolen hat to protect their heads from -20C cold? Real men stay indoors and polish their chainsaws when it's cold? :D

-20C cold is the perfect cold to go outside and engage in chainsaw-toting, woodcutting lumberjack-esque manliness! :D

Hair and hat are optional. I don't know what manly woodcutter wear in Sweden is, but here in the US and Canada it's a toque on your head, flannel shirt with sleeves rolled up (in order to show off the hairy forearms), and woodchips flying as you work up a sweat carving up logs and trees.

You then bring the wood back inside and sit by the fire for a while. After cutting the wood the manly man doesn't loiter around outside unless he wants the perspiration on his body to freeze him solid. ;) :D

Re blowdryers: Ah, but real men simply wash and wear their hair, whether it is short, non-existent, or long.

Seriously though, regarding the definition of "metrosexual", Vicsun's definition is the one I am familiar with. A meterosexual is heterosexual, but simply cares about looks, clothes, makeup products etc in the same fashion as is viewed as typically "female" by Western gender role stereotypes.

The idea that it is "manly" not to take care about one's looks and groom, and "female" to do so, is very recent and also very culturally limited. Nowadays in Western society, exaggregated fixation about looks has certainly spread equally to both genders alike.

Personally, I share your view of people who spend a lot of time on their looks - it's amazing how people can give priority to something so superficial, where there are so many more important things to spend your time, effort and money on. However, whether it's a male or a female who chooses to do so, matters zilch to me, it's just a behaviour pattern I prefer to stay away from.

@Chanak: LMAO :D One thing I know for sure, and that is that Swedish woodcutters (male or female) don't cut wood in flannel shirt with rolled up sleeves in -20C (-4F) :D

But what about the "Polar Bear Club?" You know, the people that strip down when it's well below freezing outside, then jump into hot springs?

I remember hearing about them in Europe while I was living in Germany. Also in Iceland. There are also some people in North America who do that. :D

As a sidenote...I actually was a lumberjack now and then when I lived in Tennessee, hehe. One particularly cold night (it was about -7 F that night, the coldest there in many years) found me splitting seasoned wood for my woodstove (yes, I had a cast iron woodburning stove, no modern central heat...but I had a computer and an internet connection. Go figure :D ). Initially I started out wearing a thermal undershirt, wool shirt, then my old army field jacket on top of that with the removable liner installed within...and of course a touque on my head. :D Halfway into chopping, I shed the field jacket and wool shirt, as I was starting to sweat. For the rest of the time I was chopping wood, I was quite comfortable as the strenuous work kept my body warm. Once I finished, I wisely put my coat back on, gathered up some wood, and went inside before my body heat evaporated and I started to freeze. ;)

EDIT - And oh yes, my sleeves were rolled up.

It aint manly not to take care of yourself. It is manly not to give into the egotistical or superficious impression of yourself. Real men dont care what they are wearing as long as it is appropriate. Men will wear a suit if they have to. They wont doll themselves up because they are going out shopping. Well real men wont do that.

I personally dont care about how i dress or what not. To quote my friends i dress like an american. I walk around in slippers. I only wear jeans and mainly sweat shirts. That is like a no no in western europe.

But to note: I dont own an umbrella. I love walking in the rain. And i walk around geneva in -8 degrees temp with no hat or gloves. Yes i am a real man :D

There are plenty of people down here who do that, strip down to bathers and then go for a dip in the often freezing ocean. I always see them when I go windsurfing in winter and they have real guts. They are real men, even if they are crazy old seniors. ;)

Metrosexual: (noun) Of or pertaining to a straight, urban male who is eager to embrace and even show off his feminine side, especially when it comes to expensive haircuts, designer suits, and $40 face cream.

The kind of guy who paints his nails, wears flip-flops, owns a lot of shoes, takes an hour to do their hair etc. but is not really gay.

I can confirm that Tammy is not a metrosexual... He doesn't have enough style. :p :D

Is it bollocks! I know loads of blokes who wear jeans/jumper/t-shirts as their main casual attire... and I certainly do. In fact that's what I wear to work too, heh. :D

No, that just means you know how to have fun. ;) But if you had jumped into the water in order to save a drowning family of wolverines..... then you might be considered a Real Man (tm). :D

Now that only make you a man. A real man would do it in a freak snow storm while rushing towards the larges water fall in the world naked and with both arms tied behind his back. Oh yeah and he is blind. Now that would be a real man :D
