There are different kind of defenses/protections: generic spell immunities (globe of invulnerability/spell immunity), direct spell defenses (spell deflection/turning/trap), combat defenses (stoneskin, mantle, etc.)
Breach can be used to remove combat defenses, but it will fail if the mage has direct spell defenses. Still the AI of the enemy mages are not too smart, so they can be eliminated even with most of their defenses on.

About Thorin's spells. Even though he doesn't have a good set of mage fighting spells early, remember he's soloing, and therefore gains xp 6 times as fast as a normal party. There are a lot of quests that do not require fighting difficult mages that can be done until you get all the spells you need.

I noticed that no one included Power Word Kill in their 9th level. I think that spell is great. Besides taking out about 80% of the mages in the game, you can use it to finish off "badly injured" anything. Notables like all 5 dragons, Bhodi, and the Slayer fell (after some spell triggered Lower Resistences that is) to this great spell.

Am I the only person who likes to shoot 5 acid arrows into a monster and then sit back and watch them twitch to death?
