i think im gonna have to revoke my previous statement. i don't think you can really have a most usefull spell. lower resistance now that i think of it is very useful with a spell trigger. but only against those with high enough magic resistance to care. abi-dalzims is actually the most useful.

But takemeaway, you have to realise that characters without high magic resist are normaly pretty easy, and only require wepeons to be smashed into there faces. However, difficult fights, such as ones with dragons, always (atleast for me) required all 4 of my magic users to cast lower resist then bombard them with spells. Without the lower resist, I would have found the fights near impossible. (unless I used extreme cheese)
Therefore, you have to say lower resist is the most usefull.

chaincontingency and project image owns!!!!!!(I discovered that I didn't use simmies at all with my sorceror after I had PI)
But, for the easest way to gain experience: use project image, imprisonment and freedom. Imprison a neutral enemy(such as a dragon), and then release it with freedom. The enemy doesn't turn hostile. Do it over and over again. Use project image to conserve your precious high level spells/scrolls.
My friend who is playing multiplayer with me was too anxious to dual class from Kensai to Thief. I helped him pump up two levels this way.

Unless I'm playing with a Paladin (who has Carsomyr), I find the magic-removal spells to be useful, especially Pierce Magic. I also make good use of Lower Resistance and Greater Malison and Doom and Horror. But the spell that I use the most is Magic Missile.
The cleric spells I use the most are, of course, the healing spells and the buffing spells.

Under most conditions I would say magic missile. Sometimes you will have to treat your oppenent with some spells before casting it but who can beat two mages throwing 5 mm apiece.

Another mage, casting Horrid Wilting

Nothing can do more damage to several foes at the same time!

Spellstrike, Magic Missle, Improved Alacrity (although a bit cheesy), Power Word: Kill for those damn mages. Oh, and Mordenkain's Sword.

Since spells tend to be situational I was disinclined to offer an opinion. However, during my current replay, I feel compelled to propose Invisibility as the most useful of spells (and derivatives thereof). How would your thief be able to scout ahead unseen into enemy ranks for traps and not set them off withiout being invisible at the time (ie unable to HIS and detect traps at the same time)? Moreover, a recent variation I used (and may have been discussed elsewhere in the forum previously) was to make my clerics Invisible while turning undead. They walk forward, co-opting undead minions, destroying them utterly just passing by them unseen.
I actually have an issue with this, I think turning undead counts as a combat action and as such should negate invisibility. I cannot imagine how a cleric could turn undead while invisible. I always thought from the P&P version that you had to move to confront the undead and present your (un)/holy symbol while vocalizing some religious hoodoo. Doesn't make sense you can do it invisibly. (Aside: I tried this with a cleric using a ring of invisibility and after activation (via the backpack icon) turining on the undead turning rendered the cleric visible again - I only tried this once so have yet to repeat and verify. Maybe an interesting disitnction in ring and spell though...)
Invisibility - don't leave home without it..

Project Image.
It's one of the strongest spells in the game to say the least and can be very broken if used correctly.

Even more weird is that druids can cast Nature's Beautie without breaking invisibility

That would be the manifestation of inner beauty, normally left unseen
