I'd say it was a lot like Halo, in that it's overrated. In a big way. It's barely even an RPG, for crying out loud. It's Zelda 64 with twiddling.

My character getting scars is not going to make up for a plot archetype that wasn't very good when Oog cracked it out while around the cave's fire. My character having adjustable hair is not going to make up for an alignment system that was supposed to be "your actions can have consequences" but ends up being "you can kill half a dozen villagers every now and then and everybody still thinks you're the greatest guy around". Tattoos are not going to make up for Molyneux's politician-like promising of things that don't get delivered ("Fable's gonna have a revolutionary alignment system, trees that grow, and also a free health-care system"). All of the little cool things are not going to make up for a boring combat system, a lacklustre plot, and plot depth (that is, how deep the plot goes, this is different from the quality of the plot in the first place) that's in roughly puddle category. Purty grass effects are not going to make up for ridiculously restrictive terrain (Oh, no, some SLIGHTLY HIGHER GRASS. I will NEVER walk through that).

It has so many lousy game cliches. Katanas? Sure, despite the fact that there's no other real Japanese stuff, or katanas being made to serve against Japanese armour as opposed to the rather heavier European armour of the time (they would chip a lot), the people who think "Japanese? KEWL!" will drool over it. Hierarchic weapon progression? Sure, we'll have iron beat steal beat some other thing that we'll get somebody to make up beat magical fairy crap or something. A character system that combines nearly extraneous detail featuring dubious game benefits (Bald guys look less scary? Tell that to a tattooed biker with a shaved head) with stultifying limits (No hair or eye colour choices?)

Just as Halo featured the same battles fought in the same terrain over and over with weapons and equipment that often seemed strangely anachronistic (HINT: We already have night-vision goggles and semi-automatic shotguns), Fable featured pseudo-pseudo-RPG gameplay (because you can only have a real RPG when it involves dice, don'tchaknow) and Peter M. promising things that never got delivered.

I'd give it a 7 out of ten, 6.5 if I'd been playing KotOR or a computer-based RPG any time recently. Harsh, yes, but I don't play games for the eye candy, unless it means something.

Fable was good but not GREAT

morrowind is the best rpg.

of course morrowinds graphics suck, but thats not really what i care about in an RPG. Fable was made for a more new-age class of gamers. Only true rpg fans can enjoy the depth of morrowind to the fullest

the grahics and the realism (like getting bigger muscles with more physique and toughness and health) were increible and i really liked everything about it...

except the thing that makes RPGs a RPG, a nice good plot! Fable's plot just plain SUCKED, crapy ending to a somewhat nice beggining.

Halo don't have night vision goggles. Plus Halo had a GREAT story.

So far I like Fable. I mean really like it. Yes, it's short, seeing as how you could basically beat it all in once sitting if you wanted to, but I'm still doing the side missions like collecting all the rare weapons and maxing out my experience. I did it with the best RPG in existence, Final Fantasy 7, and I'm doing it here. That's what I look for in an RPG is being able to roam about doing the little side missions. It's nice to stray from the main part of the game to beef up or find new stuff. The graphics were pretty good. I wish there was more of a variety of bad guys, but still I wouldn't complain about them. It's also cool that you have the option to keep playing the game even after you beat it, which is a first time experience for me. I know when it comes to it I'm gonna kill my sister and get the sword of Aeons. It's Fable's interaction that keeps me playing. I mean seriously, almost EVERYTHING in the game can be interacted with. I keep telling people it's The Sims but so much cooler.

One thing that weirds me out is why the hell Lady Grey's story was even in the game. I mean, she's a hot babe with big boobs that's also my wife. She's taking forever to give me what I married her for so I went and bought it.

However, I think Fable 2 is going to be a huge mind-blowing experience. I think they're well aware (or should be at least) that their game was way too short. I was hoping it'd be online capable so at least we could download extra quests and what not, but alas my dreams were crushed.

Final result:
8/10

I think Fable is a rather Humoristic version of a RP Game..
I bet they had a great deal of fun while making it...
all the villages seem so Etopian .. so peacefull..while the more..corrupt areas are just TO evil :)
its a laugh!.. im sure they had a laugh when they made the random shouts that the common ppl shout after you :D

"the guild og hero's" (wich is just silly) hehe.. im having a laugh everytime i play the game hehe..
But i just love the game..i love the game for it's crappy plot..for its overreacting when it comes to the areas.. its just great!
one thing im missing.. is dialogs .. there aren't any..and that's a real shame.. some times i would like to be able to talk back to people..and be real real real evil to them (call them something else than "****")
its great!

Fable is not the best rpg of all time here are my points:
1) Only lasts a measly 10 hours, thats nothing
2) Too easy, i was never challenged once
3) No Race choices, i want Drow and Elves

I personally think Fable could have been alot better, however it was still, desptie being easy and short, a quite fun experience. On a scale of One to Awesome, I would give this game a Wicked-Sick (The scale of one to awesome is a very difficult thing to explain, but wicked sick is at about 8)

I'd say that Fable is more like the Halo 2 of RPGs. Halo 2 was in development for twenty two months, they had all the time, money, man hours and resources they needed to make it into singularly the best first person experience ever seen on a console. But they fell short because of all this, not in spite of it.

Halo was a great game because it was a break-out title from a new development company, and was the baby of a group of gifted programmers that did everything that they could to make it the best game ever. And they really did just that. Halo was the only X-Box title that I would consider buying for the first two years of X-Box's life, the best launch title to date, contending perhaps with GTA3 or Metal Gear 2.

Fable didn't have this going for it. It would not be the first RPG to hit X-Box, so it tried to make up for this in creativity; which I'm happy to say worked. There are enough secrets and different approaches to strategy and such that the game can be played several times through without playing the same game twice. And although the graphics can get a bit twitchy at times, it is the most beautiful RPG that I've played since Final Fantasy X (IX looked fantastic as well.) The numerous but minor failings of the game only detract from the experience during extended play, really, and that's probably a good thing.

So I would say yes and no to that. It's a game that unfortuanately didn't live up to its own expectations or those of its hundreds of thousands of fans, but it is a great RPG experience none the less, and like Halo one or two, an X-Box must have.

amen...

i love Fable...

fair enough, if you ran through the game and didn't spend much time buying properties, annoying villagers and taking Side Quests, you could complete the game very quickly...

but where's the fun in that? =P

it isn't about length of gameplay or being such a hard game that you just get "annoyed" with it and end up throwing it at the nearest wall. it's about showing off with new styles of NPC interaction, amazing detailed graphics, character growth and many other things...

you can't compare Fable to Morrowind, or any other game for that matter... it's in a class of it's own! =P

ok, so Morrowind takes absolutely hours to complete, and is a kick-ass game in it's own right, with it's cheesy graphics and blocky movement! =) t give Fable a break, it's paving the way for a new breed of RPG, inviting new gamers to the genre that has consumed most of our lives! =)

Hi all - my first post here. Speaking of new gamers... I cannot answer the poll question directly because I have no frame of reference. I am an old-time PC gamer who, believe it or not, has never owned (and barely even touched) a console game before. But after playing Halo for PC, I was intrigued and decided to take the plunge into X-Box. So a few days ago I bought the console, Halo2, and Fable.

I ran home, popped in Halo2, and played for about an hour. It took a bit of work to get used to the sticks after decades of using a mouse and keyboard  , but I thought, "Cool, I can handle this, now lemme check out Fable and see what all the talk's about." Which leads me to...

I don't know if it's the best, but I think Fable is a great game!

I can see where the points made by some people could be true, e.g. too easy, too short, too linear etc. Even as a console newb, I can pretty much kick butt in most fights, and when I set my mind to completing a quest, I can usually do it pretty quickly. But as 3V1L 0N3 says above... where's the fun in that? What are you trying to prove when you power your way through a single-player game?

I'm not new to the RPG genre (EverQuest has been my main PC game for years), and for me, the primary source of enjoyment in RPG's is exploring the world and taking advantage of all the features and details that the developers work so hard on. So for me, Fable fits the bill. It just looks so darned good that I really enjoy wandering around checking things out, practicing melee & magic combat by returning to zones to slaughter creatures over and over again... :D

As many have said before me, if one focuses on what is there rather than what isn't, Fable has a lot to offer. All in all, a hearty thumbs-up from me!

P.S. I got so hooked that I haven't yet loaded Halo2 again! :)

If anyone who played and enjoyed Fable still hasn't tried World of Warcraft yet, you're seriously missing out.

Honestly - get a copy and find out just what makes it probably the best game I've played in any genre ever.

I'd give it an 7.5/10. It was short, but great graphics, fun gameplay, if a little repetitive. I wouldn't really classify it strictly as an RPG, almost more action adventure. The combat system was really good, and your own character was highly customizable.

I liked KOTOR far more, and for the PC, BGII remains the hallmark of RPGs

Fable is an okay game. It's no where in the ball park of the best RPG. There are at least twenty titles better than it, in my estimate. Even in terms of the X-Box there are many better RPGs, such as the KoTOR titles and Jade Empire; these games surpass it in terms of scope and quality. Still, it was enjoyable. The customization options and action game play made it entertaining. Ultimately, it suffered from being intolerably short, not having enough NPC interaction and exploration, and having a fairly predictable plot.
...and for being blatantly linear.
Linear isn't always bad. In the case of Fable, it was the least of its several failings. However, I was a bit suprised it ended up being so very linear, considering it was being marketed as a "cutting edge" RPG where you had choices and control over this character's life. Apparently, all that can be summed up in "You can be good or evil, and it doesn't really affect the plot or the progression of the game in the least. However, you will grow some wicked bad horns if you're evil. Those will go well with your tatoo of an orange you can have plastered on your shoulders. Go player choice!"

LOL! That's well put. It comes down to marketing, which in turn is a matter of convincing people all too often that white is black, and night, day.

For a good laugh, read over the threads in this forum before the game appeared. Note where people were absorbing the PR without discrimination and salivating in a manner that was completely non-critical. This, despite the obvious lack of detail from the developers, the haziness of so much else, and the lengthy record of failing to provide El Dorado despite the endless broken promises from the gaming industry over the years.

That's not to say the field is devoid of talent, and good games are impossible to find. But increasingly the industry is willing to churn out games that offer an RPG-lite experience, and relies upon the short memories of kids and adults to conveniently forget about 80+ hour RPG hits of past years.

I can't be bothered reading through the whole thread, but Fable. Best of all RPGs. Ahhahaha. Its a Role-Playing game yet you are terribly restricted to what you can do story/character wise. I mean compare it to any RPG game, its horridly simple. Sure you're free to roam the world, farely easilly. But so are you in GTA would you say that that is a good RPG game? Sure you could say that you play a role in the game so it is in fact a role-playing game. But then, any game with a story-line is a role-playing game.
